They wanted their new nation to be built around the idea that god is the ruler. Hysteria began in Salem because of the idea of satan and strange illnesses among children. People that were accused of being a witch had a trial to see whether they were guilty or not. Many people were hung and killed before the ban of the trials in 1692. Arthur Miller created the play "Crucible" after being accused of being a communist to show the similarities of the witch trials and present day.
