There is a lot of diversity among geographic regions in Argentina. Buenos Aires is very different from Salta which is very different from the south, where the glaciers are. These differences are racial, cultural, architectural, linguistic – you name it. In BA, many Argentines are white and value European culture. In the north, more people have indigenous roots and speak indigenous languages.

I studied economics and political history while living in Buenos Aires. I attended a school for international development and carried out an independent project where I interviewed single mothers receiving welfare payments from the government. I also participated in the local culture through tango lessons, rock music shows (super popular in Argentina!), and political demonstrations.

There is definitely a culture of machismo that makes it more dangerous to be an American girl due to their preconceptions. In my experience, many people also assume Americans are ignorant about other people's cultures and histories. Argentines know a lot about the political situation in the US since our economy greatly influences their economy, but that awareness isn't always reciprocated.

Argentine food is very meat-heavy, particularly beef. And the food is not heavily spiced; chiles are not part of the cuisine. The music scene is wonderful - salsa dancing is common at least in cities, as is tango, although tango is often viewed by young people as old-fashioned. I found a really strong rock music scene when I was there – rock was imported from the US in the 1960s, and then in the 1980s all foreign music was banned during the War of the Malvinas (or Faulklands War) with Britain, so Argentine rock bands took over.

Buenos Aires is amazing. I recommend all the museums, especially the Bellas Artes and the MALBA (contemporary art). Have a picnic in Bosques de Palermo or get food in Palermo Soho, which is also the shopping neighborhood. The Recoleta Cemetery has the graves of several famous people, including Evita Perón, and is full of amazing mausoleums because the city is at sea level. Make sure to go to a bakery for a medialuna, a buttery brioche-croissant in the shape of a half-moon. You can also take a day trip close to BA to Tigre, where the houses are connected by canals, similar to Venice.

There has been a lot of economic insecurity in Argentina since the early 2000s, when a huge banking crisis wiped out many people's life savings. There has been lots of change in the political climate based on which party is in control of the presidency as well.

Argentine Spanish is different in many ways from the Spanish you might speak or be familiar with. But the two are still very mutually intelligible. I practiced the 'vos' tense at school before traveling there, and I reviewed the vocabulary that would be different ("palta" instead of "aguacate," "ananá" instead of "piña").
