After presidency he became the 10th Chief Justice of the United States. He was elected President in 1908 but he was beaten in the re-election by Woodrill Wilson. Thats when President Warren G Harding appointed Taft to the the Supreme Court Justice. A short month after that,  he had passed away. How they are chosen:
A large group of nominees are chosen. If a nominee is siding with two parties he could risk being a major flaw. Their job is to approve cases that have been passed through the rest of the courts. Though he had made bad decisions with his health, he got to live through most of it. He did however die from his weight problem shortly after he became the Justice.
