By Pablo Picasso. Oil on canvas, created in Fontainebleau (summer 1921). The reason why I chose this piece of painting by Picasso is due to its color choices. Personally I dislike all dark color tones, as well as odd shapes, so when I saw this painting it gave me an awful feeling. However, I really respect Picasso. He spent his life time learning how to draw like a kid, and I can't argue that he had reached his dream of life and had made the most unique paintings in the world.
-Sonia Zhang

By Jasper Johns. Encaustic, oil, and collage on fabric mounted on plywood. Created in 1954. This may seem to be a boring piece of painting, however this is the most meaningful painting I've ever seen. The original painting have three different sizes of canvas piled on top of each other with the same image of the United States flag. The artist was trying to express the distance between himself and the country. When standing further away from this painting, you feel that it is far away due to its piled up canvases. However when you stand closer to the three canvas of paint, the smallest canvas on top seem to be reachable. Therefore, from its well thought design and use of materials, this painting interests me.
-Sonia Zhang

By John Cage. Ink on paper, created in 1952 or 1953. The reason why I've chosen this piece of art is due to its extreme simplicity. I like everything about it, the color, the texture, the details, etc. and of course the story. However, in other's opinion this piece may share similar elements with other art works as well.

A large part of the reason that I dislike this artwork is not so much because of the piece itself, but due to its part in the DADA movement. The DADA movement aims to destroy the idea of art, but artworks such as this one all fail to achieve this goal, as they all still have elements of form, theme, and context and can therefore still be considered art. As a result, the artwork fails to achieve its goal and becomes an artwork that is merely chaotic and unappealing to the eye.
- Chloe Hui

I believe this to be a very visually strong piece because of the contrasting elements that work well together. The color scheme employed consists of subtle complimentary of orange and blue balanced by other beige/neutral tones. The girl's gaze is directed at the viewer, which juxtaposes against the direction her body is facing. I personally like this painting because of the way the shading on the fabric materials and skin are rendered, which also adds to the formal quality of the work itself.

-Iris

I don't personally enjoy the vibrancy and overload of primary colors in the artwork, as I feel a disconnection between the mood of the scene and the intensity of the red. The solid blocks of color, devoid of shading, is a bit confusing to look at, especially considering the tablecloth and the wallpaper has the same design & color, but there isn't enough darkness/light contrast, which takes away the dimension and depth of the scene. However, it is very atmospheric and eye-catching to look at, and the viewer can still easily determine what the subject matter is

-Iris

The reason I like this work is mainly because of the realism of the painting since the artist is able to make the egg look very three dimensional and realistic. Although the work is a painting of a everyday object, I'm amazed by the artist's ability with oil painting because many people would think the fried egg is a photograph.

Unlike 'fountain,' which provoked feelings and deeper thinking in the viewers as well as an artistic revolution, the bicycle wheel has no deeper meaning or value, and only presents the same message as all the other 'Readymades' do, regarding consumerist culture and mass-manufactured goods. There were barely any adjustments made and didn't necessarily seem well-thought out. Without the historical context, it has little to no worth. Its formal elements are rather lacking, as one can't analyze the artwork, but only rather the bicycle wheel and stool in their original states, as produced by the original manufacturer.

-Iris

I think The Starry Night by Van Gogh gives the sense of calmness and peace, which is the reason I really appreciate this piece of work. Firstly, the color usage of the piece is outstanding, where he includes the combination of white and yellow with the dark blues and greens to emphasise on the powerful night sky. Adding on, the brushstrokes and swirls of the sky is also very unique and interesting. Personally, it creates the sense of a dream for me because the small town in comparison with the dramatic night sky is much darker and still. Unfortunately, people were unable to value the piece of art before his death.
-Ben Lin

By Vincent Van Gogh. Created in 1889 using oil paint. This painting is one of my favorite paintings. The night sky depicted by the artist in the Starry Night painting is brimming with swirly clouds, shining stars, and a bright crescent moon. There are various interpretations of Starry Night but when I look at the painting my interpretation is that this canvas depicts hope. It seems that Van Gogh was showing that even with a dark night such as this it is still possible to see light in the windows of the houses. There are reasons why this painting is famous. The use of contrasting colors helps convey powerful emotions to the audience.
- Grace Fu

By Andy Warhol. Created in 1967 using a printing process. The reason I like this artwork so much is because it shows a lot of vibrant colors that really stood out and appealed to me when I first look at it. Warhol used non-representational color and representational form to convey different sensations. However, I do not think this artwork was appropriate since this was created right after the celebrity's suicide. This artwork was also made really fast and chancy, which might not have captured Marilyn Monroe's features.
- Grace Fu

Not only does the composition and lighting effectively highlight the two characters, it also illuminates the gentle curiosity of the girl and the timidness of the deer. In summary, a wonderful combination of subtle storytelling and aesthetic beauty.

- Isa Pan

Though I appreciate some of their works, I find some posters, such as the one above, rather unattractive and ineffective. While I could go on about the inappropriate font sizes, lack of balanced composition and the disappointing use of the Comic Sans font, the aspect I don’t really like is the way the Guerrilla Girls tend to attack their target audience in a passive aggressive manner. By also including key words such as “complain” and “feminist”, I feel like this poster creates a negative image for feminists and other activists.

- Isa Pan

In my perspective this piece by Je Suit Charlie, is a work that i like, but suspect might not be good. The main reason why I like this piece is because the overall tone is and mood is very clear and it seems like it contains a deep message behind this artwork. However, I feel like the detail is missing in this work, which people might think its not that good.
-Daniel

This piece is done by Flavia Souza. I chose this piece for this column, mainly because this piece doesn’t seem interesting. First of all, for me this piece only contains different line colors that connects to each other and nothing else seems appealing. I also think the variety of shape and line will bring this piece more attractive. Right now it contains many colors, but i don’t enjoy looking at it.
-Daniel
