Nieto and Bode describe tracking as something that is inequitable and that, "Tracking may begin at the very earliest grades, and decisions about student placement are sometimes made on tenuous grounds. These can include social indicators, such as information provided on registration forms, initial interviews with parents, and teachers’ prior knowledge about specific students. Research over many years has confirmed that tracking is frequently linked with racial, ethnic, and social class differences" (93 Nieto & Bode). I chose this topic because I feel that tracking is something that affected me in my early years of school when my parents were a low income household and when my understanding of the english language was poor.

How One School Stopped Tracking Students

This article is very interesting because it discusses how one school took the steps to end tracking at their school. For example, they did this by adding ELA as extra classes and not as something that would replace another important class like math. This put non english speakers on a more equal playing field.
