His dad got an illness that was incurable. He was set to die a week or so before he got sent home.  Which is in 8 months. Dowling is a (MWD) team, a military working dog team. He and his dog Rex the main character, are an (IED) detection team, a Improvised explosive device detection team. They train every day so Rex is familiar to the scents of the bomb making material like, det cord, C4, and other weird stuff. They get there and it smells of human and dead animal waste. The smell is accounted for from the old chicken factory, and the garbage. Sargent Red shows them around to find a suitable spot for him and Rex. Dowling doesn't want to risk Rex biting anyone. The next day they were attacked with mortars and (RPG's), Rocket propelled grenades. The heat is brutal there  especially for a dog. They constantly drink water and they run out. Rex needs the water more than Dowling because Dowling made a promise to Rex that he would never let anything happen to him. Rex and Mike get their first job at the camp. They get to do some detection work out of camp. There are some (IEDs) that blow up by themselves without warning. Dowling is afraid that Rex will step on an (IED), but he is trained well. When Rex finds something Mike calls the (EOD) team, Explosive ordnance disposal. They defuse the bomb or bombs. All Dowling has to do to get Rex to search for the (IEDs) is show him his kong ball and he searches. He knows the seek command very well he loves to seek out (IEDs). Rex is in constant danger all the time. He gets shot at and (RPGs) over his head. Rex is the main target when he goes patrolling because he finds the (IEDs) that are meant to harm to the US military. That is called the triangle of death. It is called that because there are 3 camps that run to form a triangle. Also because there are (IED) after (IED). Nowhere is safe out of camp. There are patrol cars that are unlucky to come back. Also some soldiers that are unlucky to make it back to camp. Even in the camp is not safe from the attacks. But people in camp where only injured, and received the purple heart for being injured during duty in camp. Rex was injured during duty but he is not eligible for it since he is a dog. Dowling and Rex went on patrol with his partner Sergeant Atam Cann also a (MWD) team. Sergeant Adams was unlucky that day (RIP). His dog was lucky that day and is still serving today. The next day he gets one last mission before he leaves. The drill sergeant sends word he gets to go home in 2 hours he had no idea it was so early in the morning. He puts Rex in his crate and KABOOM! The patrol car he was to go in on his last mission, became compromised Rex and Dowling cheated death that day and many more before that. Mike is on his way home now, and he gets a call from his mom that he has a surprise when he gets home.
