Germany saw the invasion of Belgium as necessary to avoid having to fight a war on two fronts, with both France and Russia as adversaries.

The invasion of Belgium was met with international condemnation, as Belgium had declared its neutrality and had not been involved in the events leading up to the war. Britain, which had a longstanding treaty with Belgium guaranteeing its neutrality, responded by declaring war on Germany on August 4, 1914.

The German invasion of Belgium was marked by significant brutality and destruction, as German forces sought to quickly push through the country and reach France. The German army faced stiff resistance from Belgian forces, as well as from British and French troops that had been sent to assist Belgium.

Despite the challenges, Germany was ultimately able to push through Belgium and reach France, where it engaged in a series of brutal battles along the Western Front that would last for years.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, took place on June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The assassination was carried out by a Bosnian Serb nationalist named Gavrilo Princip, who was a member of a group known as the Black Hand.

The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was a key event that led to the outbreak of World War I. Austria-Hungary saw the assassination as a direct attack on their sovereignty and declared war on Serbia. The alliance system in Europe then kicked in, with other countries being drawn into the conflict. Within weeks, the world was at war.

There were already existing tensions between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, as Serbia sought to create a pan-Slavic state that would include Bosnia and Herzegovina, which were then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand provided Austria-Hungary with the excuse they needed to take action against Serbia.

The assassination also highlighted the growing nationalist and anti-Austrian sentiment among the various ethnic groups in the Balkans, including the Serbs, Croats, and Bosniaks. These tensions had been building for years, and the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the spark that set off the powder keg.
