March 1st 1909, Today was the day. Today Peary and I were going to make one final trip out to the North Pole. We set off with a crew of 22 men and 130 dogs. THE WIND ON THE TRIP WAS AS FIERCE AS A LION (simile). While on the trip Peary invented a system. The system would divide the men and dogs into 6 teams. Each team would go to their specific place, make an igloo with supplies left inside for us, and turn back. The teams would continue to do so until all teams have turned back.

April 1, 1909, Peary and I began the final 5-day dash. We would camp out in an igloo overnight then move to the next igloo and continue to do so until we reached the last one. WE HAD ENOUGH SUPPLIES TO LAST US FOREVER (hyperbole)!

April 6, 1909, We took many measurements using tools called a chronometer, and a sextant. After confirming our longitude and latitude, we confirmed that we were the first people to reach the North Pole! I got to put an American Flag in the snow!

Later in years, Peary got all of the credit because he was white and I was black. People didn’t like black people back then so they left me out and denied my recognition.

In 1955, I received a congressional medal and got the credit I deserved a long time ago.

April 3, 1909

I was walking against the forceful wind in hope to find the North Pole. I closed my eyes to ESCAPE THE WIND'S PIERCING GAZE (personification). I had gone a little further when I lost my balance and slipped into the icy water. Every time I tried to get back on the ice my hands slipped on the ice surrounding me. I was getting really cold, and did not think I would make it to the North Pole or anywhere else. I could already feel myself being WRAPPED IN THE COLD ARMS OF DEATH (personification).
When I thought all was lost I was pulled out of the icy water by one of the members of the local Inuit tribe. He was one of the members in our group. His name is Ootah.

April 6, 1909

Thanks to Ootah I was one of the first people ever to discover the North Pole! Without him I would not have survived the freezing cold water of the Arctic. Even though my race was different than most of the people around me I was still happy to experience the cold and dangerous climate, the rock hard food, all the different people, and the skills some of those people taught me. I was granted the privilege of placing the American Flag in the frozen ground of the North Pole! I will treasure all the wonderful memories I experienced on my expedition to find the North Pole.

A Couple Years Before Death

Even though I did not get credit for everything right away I would definitely consider my trip worth it. Not many people get the chance to experience the amazing things I did, so most of the people who do take that opportunity without hesitation. Some would say SEIZE YOUR MOMENT (idiom).

     March 9th, 1909

Guess what! Today I am going to try and make this final trip to the North pole. We have made two trips already and failed to make it. I just wish that this trip will be the one. We have twenty-two men on board to help and 130 dogs on board. In the last trips the wind was like a gush of ice down your back (metaphor). Some times the leader can be as mean as a lion (simile). Got to go. Boss says we are almost there. Hope we make it. I forgot to write about the team. There are going to be six teams and they are going to make igloos and store a food supply for the next group before the turned back. Well got to go.

April 1rst, 1909

Today is the day. All the teams have come back and it is time for me and Peary to go on our five-day trip. I have been the only healthy one. I guess that I will have to be in many igloos for five nights. Got to go.

        1878
What a year. I can't believe it! I found my first job. I got a job as a cabin boy. I learned many things at that job, like sportsmanship, geography, math, and history. When my ships caption died, I was heartbroken. I could have freedom, but now I couldn't. The only other job I could find was a sales clerk.

1887
One day this man named Robert Perrie, a U.S Navy caption, came from his last trip. Most people have heard of him. He made many trips across the world. I really missed the rush of working on a ship. He left his ship to get some supplies for his next adventure. That was when he met me and asked me if I knew where the wool clothes were. We started to talk, and he was impressed with my knowledge about seabearing. Then he asked me if I wanted to go on future adventures with him. I happily accepted because I wanted to see more sights than this little store, nd wanted to feel the rush of adrenaline. He told me he had a dream to be the first man to reach the North Pole.
1891
The first trip we went to was Greenland. It wasn't even green at all!! It was cold and hard. I remembered how it felt, but it felt so weird to be back on a ship again. It was like I was in a different world. I saw mountains of white snow and white creatures. Everything was freezing cold. We also learned it was an island. Also, when we were there, we met the local Inuit tribe. That's when they taught me essential skills to survive. It was nice to be around people who had the same skin as me. I think the Inuit tribe liked me better because I looked like them. It was me who embraced the tribes customs. I think the I learned the how they spoke, built igloos, trained dogs, and rode them. Sled dogs were needed for a trip. They were needed to sense danger ahead from them. We made five more trips to the artic.

1895
I cant believe it! We charted the whole icecap of Greenland.
1897
We found three giant meteorites AS BIG AS A HOUSE, and sold them to the American Museum of Natural History. We did that to finance our next trip.
1902
We tried to reach the north pole, but we failed. I know we'll make it next time.

1906
I think we'll make it this time. We rode this ship called "The Roosevelt" I can't believe it took us so far! I wish it took us farther than any other ship. I wish it took us farther we were only 174 miles from our target. We had to go back because we ran out of supplies. Perrie was 50 years old, and I was 40, we wanted to try one more time to the north pole. Perrie was to old to go any more so, if we failed, our career would be over.

1909
perrie is GETTING OLDER EACH DAY THE EARTH SPINS, and this our last trip. What we'll bring to our trip us and 22 men, and 130 sledogs. We encountered many things like pressure ridges, and leads. Using the plan perrie made there would be six teams, and when they reached ther spot they would build an igloo with a cash of supplies for the next team. Perrie got frost bite on eight of his toes, and got sick. He also fell off his sled and I had to pull him off. We made it to the north pole on April 1st I'm so happy

Years Later
Perrie was famous for discovering the north pole, even thought I planted the flag. It's okay, I knew this would happen. That how life is. Perrie got many awards.

1955
I so happy I got the award from two presidents I'm so happy! At least I got credit for it. I know it was small but it's making effect in history.
<sup>

</sup>

1909
After 20 years of trying to reach the North Pole, I finally realized I was only 150 miles away. I was leading the group in the journey. Then, all of a sudden, I slipped and fell into the ice cold. I tried to get out but every time I would try to grab the ice it would break even more. My muscles started to knot, my blood flow slowed down, my vision got blurry, and my brain started to power down. My body was even colder because I started to panic and that made me move, jump, and swim around which made me also very tired. Out of my corder of my eye I could see a blurry object running towards me. Whoosh! I SHOT OUT OF THE WATER LIKE A SPACESHIP BLASTING INTO SPACE. When I was sat down on the ground my good friend Peary told me that Ootah had pulled me out of the water. Ootah was apart of the Inuit men. There were four Inuit men on the journey with Peary and I including Ootah.
April 6, 1909
Three days after I fell into the ice cold ocean, Peary, the four inuit men and I finally reached the North Pole. I had the privilege to plant the American flag in the snow. For the journey all we ate was PEMMICANS THAT TASTES LIKE ROCKS. When we got back to North America, Peary got all the credit because he was a white man. He got a bunch of awards from the president. Peary got all the fame that Henson deserved too. Because Henson was African American he only received a few miner awards.
1955
Henson died in 1955 but in the 1960's new laws were passed outlawing discrimination based on race and ethnicity. Later in 1988, Henson body was moved to Arlington National Cemetery.

April 5, 1909
Two decades of trying to reach the North Pole, now to be 150 miles away from our destination. This has to be the most exciting day of my life, to be this close to reaching my life goal with my best pal, Peary. But with all the excitement and my guard down, I slipped and slid into the ice-cold water. The water felt like pins and needles piercing my skin. (simile) My muscles knotting tighter than a rubber band wrapped tightly around your finger turning it purple. (Metaphor) My body went limp and numb, brain shutting down and my crystal clear vision becoming blurry and foggy. Giving up, knowing this was my end. So close to my goal only to be stopped by hypothermia. But faster than my brain could process, I was lying face-up, in front of my good pal Ootah. Peary and Ootah helped me on a dog sled and had trodden to the nearest igloo, lighting a fire on the ice to warm my clothes and warmed up tea to bring my body temperature back up.

April 6, 1909,

We started tracking in the icy breeze once more. We were face to face (personification) with wind that was colder than any metal. (metaphor) As we continued to walk we came to a peak, Peary said that he was more than sure this was our destination. Peary was fidgeting with our equipment to pinpoint if this exact spot was the North Pole. Sure enough, it was. We had finally reached our biggest achievement, to be the first people to set foot on the untouched North Pole. This was one of the most exciting and long-awaited moments of my life. I had taken hold of our USA flag and drilled it far into the snow cap peak, marking a moment for the history books, I, Matthew Henson, with my pal Robert Peary had reached the North Pole.

March 1st,1909
Today was the day that Perry and I were going to make your last trip to the arctic circle in hopes to reach the top of the north pole. Using our team of twenty-two men and 130 dogs we devised ourselves in to six groups. The plan was to one of the six groups would go to a certain point, build an igloo with a stash of items then head back. We would keep going this till we make it to the top of the earth. I hope we make it the top, It is already as cold as a when me and ex broke up, and I didn't want to give up now.

Today was the day, it was our turn, Perry, I and the rest of our team were going to make the last trip to the top of the world. On our way to the second igloo we hit a large blizzard, the snow danced around us with high speeds knocking us around like ragdolls. Once we made it to the hill we knew it, We had made it to the very top of the world!

March 1 , 1909

Today, Peary and I will go on our very last trip to the North Pole. When we adventured out to the North pole with our twenty-two men and 130 dogs it was as cold as an ice cube (Simile). Traveling with the dog sleds made it easier to get from one destination to the next. Also, with the dogs on our journey, they help us sense danger ahead. On our way Peary finally figured out a method so the men and dogs that would split into 6 different teams. They have to get to their designated spot to build igloos and take supplies to each of their igloos for the returning team.

April 1, 1909

On this day, Peary and I set off to our five day dash to every igloo the support team made to finally reach our destination. Each igloo was built nicely as everyday came along.

April 6, 1909

Today was the official day we said that we will finally reach the top of the world, the North Pole. With many hard to find measurements, we finally found the longitude and latitude. We found it by using the tools chronometer and sextant. After finding the right measurements, we officially can say we were the first people to reach the North Pole.

Years later

With both Peary’s and I’s hard work, I was a bit disappointed that Robert Peary got all the attention after our hard work, but still grateful that I got to go on the adventure with him. Remembering back to the growling winds, (Personification) and how harsh it was to live for the both of us, I believe we should both get equal attention. We both overcame extreme conditions, like what felt like the coldest day in the history of the world(hyperbole). For this, all credit for the expedition should be shared between both of us!

More years later

I am seventy years old and I finally got recognized by two presidents. I got a congressional medal from being brave during the hard times. Thinking back and remembering the great feeling when we reached the North pole, I can still feel the excitement of accomplishing a fantastic feat. (THE AIR WAS COLD AS STEEL) and we were really cold so we went to one of the igloos we built. We stayed there for a bit before heading out again. while we going to the next igloo. I stumbled into the ocean and it was freezing i almost passed out an inuit named Ootah pulled me up and saved my life.
April 6, 1909

We kept going and three days later we reached the north pole we grabbed our measuring devices to make sure we were in the center of the north pole. we confirmed that we were in the geographic north pole.

March 1st, 1909

Today is the day. My partner Peary and I are going to start our adventure to the North Pole, along with 22 other men, and 130 dogs. I am so excited!! This is the final time we are going to try to reach the North Pole. The first try was a bust, but I have confidence that we will get there. We came face to face with the freezing winds and the cold weather then, Peary came up with a plan. Peary divided the 130 dogs and 22 men into 6 teams to make it easier to travel.

March 6th, 1909

This is the end of the first week!! There have been so many pressure ridges and leads. It is freezing here too, I have gotten frostbite so many times, I lost count. The wind is howling (PERSONIFICATION), and the dogs were barking, it was like the end of the world!! (SIMILE) Other than the dogs and wind, we have done pretty well with traveling.

April 1st, 1909

Well, its officially been a month, and we are only miles away from the North Pole!! Peary and I already established that I would put the flag in the snow. I have super bad frostbite, its as if 100 bees are stinging me (SIMILE). Out of all of the days I’ve been here, I haven’t seen the sun at all, it is so gloomy here. It snows almost every day, and the snowflakes are dancers (METAPHOR).

April 6th, 1909

I just have to measure the chronometer and sextants to make my calculations… We are here!! We made it to the North Pole. I put the flag in the ground and we celebrated!! Peary and I are so excited that we finally made it here!!

Years Later

I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t get the credit I deserved. Peary, a white man, was over there getting all of the fame, but I put the flag down. I hope it’s not because I’m a different race because that’s a little offensive. I am still happy that he is getting credit because he helped me get to where I am today. I just would like to get the credit I deserve.

More Years Later

Whoo-hoo!! I finally got recognized by two presidents. Although I am seventy years old, I am still excited about this. Thinking back on one of the first days we were there, we were ice cubes!! (METAPHOR) This is so amazing, I finally got the credit I deserved!!

     March 1st, 1909
Today is the day Peary and I head all the way to the North Pole! We are going with 22 other men, and 130 dogs. I am nervous, because I know it's gonna be windy and cold. Once we were on our way, I knew I was right. (IT WAS AS COLD AS THE ICE AGE.) But I had to keep going until I reached the North Pole! I couldn't possibly fail again like the first and second trip. Once we were tired, we settled and built an igloo. It was extremely cold in there. So I wore my fur jacket and polar bear skin pants to sleep.
March 6th, 1909
We had already traveled for 5 days! Today was our 6th day and I could tell we were getting close to the North Pole. I knew this because (I WAS AS COLD AS A BLOCK OF ICE.) I immediately got some tea out and drank it. I was still very cold, but at least I felt warmer than before.
A few more days and we arrived at the North Pole! My team took measurements , and we sure are at the North Pole! My team celebrated! (WE WERE AS HAPPY AS A MONKEY WITH A BANANA!) I could hardly believe that after 2 failed missions I finally succeeded!

April 13, 1909

Today we woke up in the harsh cold of our igloos. Though, I cannot complain because it was much colder outside. At the start of my day, I ate one or two hard biscuits. Sometimes, we’d have pemmican throughout the day. (Sometimes I felt like it was as if the days would go on forever), and time would never come to sleep. I hastily got ready for the long day ahead of me.

Once we got out of our igloos, we began the treacherous walk to the next igloo. The day was seemingly calm, that was until I had fallen into the water. (The water was as cold as ice.) I felt like I was going to die! Luckily enough, some of the Inuit people we were with pulled me out of the water just in time. After walking for quite sometime after that, we made it to the next igloo. I settled down and once again, went to bed.

March 10, 1912

Dear Diary,

Today I finally got a copy of the book I wrote about my exploration of the North Pole. I called it A Negro Explorer at the North Pole. Now, maybe I can get some of the credit I deserve for getting Peary to the North Pole. After all it was me who learned from the natives all about building igloos and control dog sleds and essential arctic survival skills. Without me Peary would have not gotten to the North Pole at all.

It was a great day in history when we were the first men to reach the North Pole. It was a brilliant plan. We made pit stops by sending teams of men along the way to the North Pole. They built igloos and stocked them with food and water and resources. Once all the pit stops were set up, Peary and I used them to hop across the frozen land. We used the igloos and resources to get us to the North Pole. We finally made it on April 6th. We were the first men to reach the North Pole. Of course, since he was white, Peary got all the fame and I got none. Hopefully, now that my book is published I will get the fame I deserve.
