The protagonist of this story is a high school girl named Julie. She can get very nervous, as shown on page 87-88, when she was being questioned about Al's murder. "I had a strange urge to turn around, to run the other way before the policeman saw me .... I wanted him to go away. I didn't want to answer any more questions. " Julie also really wanted to move on from Al's murder. She didn't want to think about it, but when Sandy confessed, it proved difficult to forget. She also slowly developed a fear of Sandy, as he seemed to act a lot different.

"The Confession" takes place in a small town called Shadyside in the 90s. It is small enough to be able to walk around, as Julie and her friends often walk home from school. The entire book is during the month of May, so it is very warm, and close to Julie's high school graduation. R. L. Stine most likely made this take place in Julie's senior year to add more conflict. She has a murder to keep secret, and also has to graduate.

Theme

A theme that R. L. Stine was trying to develop is that crime will get you no where in life. He develops this theme by showing what happens to Sandy when he took the blame for Taylor. Sandy's life became devoted to making sure nobody told the police about him. On page 94, after being questioned by the police, Julie and Hillary both look out the window to see Sandy standing there. "We both stared out at him. Lurking behind the fat tree trunk, moonlight trickling along the ground in front of him, his face nearly hidden in blue shadows." Sandy also starts to act differently. For example, when he is playing basketball with Vincent, he chucks the ball at Vincent's stomach and leaves. Sandy soon begins to loose his friends, which really shows how crimes effect your life.

Antagonist

In the beginning of "The Confession," Al was causing a lot of trouble for Julie and her friends. Before high school, everyone was friends with Al, but he started to hang around trouble makers from another town, as described on page 8. "He used to be a part of our group, but then he started hanging out with some 'hard dudes' from Waynesbridge. He started drinking a lot of beer." He is greedy and selfish, as he always asked for things from his old friends. For example, on page 42, when Al returned with Vincent's parent's car. "He pulled the car to a stop in front of Vincent and me. The front of the car was just about totaled. The left front fender was crushed in. The hood was mangled." When Al was murdered, the antagonist appeared to be Sandy. Sandy had confessed to killing Al, and started to change his personality throughout the book. He was originally just a shy kid who seemed very nice, but he eventually started to stalk Julie, making sure she didn't tell the police about him. At the end of the book, it is revealed that he was just doing all of this to protect Taylor, the real murderer.

The exposition of this story took place around the first 12 pages. Throughout these pages, things such as Julie's friends, her past, and the setting were explained. On page 8, when Al showed up, most of his history was explained, such as who he is, and why he is trouble.

After Sandy confessed to all of his friends about murdering Al, Julie spent a lot of her time debating whether or not to tell the police. When she was being questioned by Officer Reed on pages 90 - 91, she really wanted to tell him. "Al's murderer was a boy in my class named Sandy Miller. He confessed to us all last week. That's what I wanted to say." In the end, she decides that she should let Hillary try and talk him into turning himself in.

The narrator of this book is the protagonist, Julie. I believe that R. L. Stine made her the narrator because she was the one who saw Al's murder. It makes the story a lot more interesting hearing things from her perspective, because unlike characters like Sandy and Taylor, she didn't know who really killed Al.
