Nonfiction for Young Adults From Delight to Wisdom

Coming from a background of reading mostly fiction books, my assumption was that everyone read mostly fiction as well. After reading Nonfiction for Young Adults From Delight to Wisdom, I now know that over 2/3 of the library is made up of nonfiction. The book says readers approach a book from one of two ways. Either they look for what they can take away from the text, or they look for what they are able to experience from the text. Delight to Wisdom also states that pleasure comes from knowing and confirming, which makes sense that nonfiction would make up most of libraries. People like to verify what they already know from a text. That is why they are most likely to read a nonfiction book. I still need to learn how to scaffold a readers learning in order for them to gain new knowledge, rather than the reader stagnantly learning what they already know.

When you ask people how they categorize books based on fiction versus nonfiction, the usual answer is fiction is not true and nonfiction is true. It's important to share that nonfiction is an umbrella term that covers biographies, autobiographies and memoirs. It's also important to note the accuracy in the facts of the book.
