My chosen waste material is the humble tea bag. I have decided on this material as I recently discovered that some tea bag manufacturers still use pp plastic in the manufacturing of their bags. This therefore means that the tea bag cannot go into the food recycling or composite. Thus becoming waste material as they must go into landfill.

In this project I will be only using Tetley tea bag's. This is because they are one of British biggest manufacturers who still use plastic in their bags and also they are easy to source.

I feel sample 3 could effectively work well for single use cups. For instance at festivals. Its light weight, rigid qualities make it perfect for carrying liquid. Furthermore seen by test 6 the tea would be easy to mould into a cup shape. The liquid in the cup would weaken the form however over a long period of time (longer than a drink). Also this material is fully biodegradable so would be capable of being made up into compost straight after use.

Using sample 4 I propose creating fully biodegradable pots used by garden centres for young plants and seedling. The strength shown by sample 4 illustrates that the pot would be strong enough to not break during transport of the pots. Also the thickness of the material would help increase the time it would take for the water to break the pots down. Furthermore tea has positive qualities for plants therefore the pot would not only be housing the plants but also giving nutrients to them at the same time.

I propose sample 2 to be used in creating lamp shades. The main reason for this decision is the way that the light travels through this sample creating interesting and unique patterns. In the strength test sample 2 showed that it would be able to cope with everyday bumps and knocks without breaking. Furthermore its lightweight nature would mean that the lamp shade would not increase the overall weight of the lamp by too much helping to make its as easy as possible to use.

Then you could go and collect their waste at the end of the working day and give the bin back to them ready to start over the next day.

If enough busy cafes agreed to this idea you would be able to collect large quantities very quickly and also have a fresh supply every day. However this idea would mean the quantity of raw material you gather would heavily rely on the cafes to sell tea. Which could fluctuate significantly depending on a range of factors e.g. weather.
