For this activity, visit the National Museum of Anthropology’s virtual tour at https://nma.nationalmuseum.gov.ph/. Choose one artifact that was not discussed in class (do not select the Manunggul Jar, Maitum Jars, Laguna Copperplate, Tabon Cave, or Butuan Balangay). Write a short reflection (100–200 words) about the artifact. Explain what it is, what it reveals about early Filipinos, and how it connects to Filipino identity today.

Take a clear screenshot or download an image of the artifact. Then, go to our class Padlet board (link: [Insert Padlet URL]). Click the "+" button to add a post. For the title, write your full name and the artifact's name. Paste your reflection in the text box and upload the image. Click “Publish” when you're done.

Make sure your work is original, respectful, and complete. This is your chance to explore and appreciate our rich cultural heritage.

Boe, Juan Ado: Lingling-o Pendant

Reflection:

The artifact I chose is the Lingling-o pendant, a jade ear ornament used by early Filipinos. It dates back to around 500 BC and has been found in different parts of Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. The Lingling-o shows that early Filipinos had a deep understanding of craftsmanship, trade, and personal adornment. The use of jade, a material not native to the Philippines, suggests that our ancestors were already engaged in regional trade.

This artifact is important to Filipino identity because it reflects our long history of creativity, beauty, and connection with other cultures. It reminds us that even in ancient times, Filipinos valued art, status, and community. Preserving items like the Lingling-o helps us appreciate where we came from and how our culture developed over time.

La, Maria Tino – Burial Cloth of Banton

Reflection:

I chose the Burial Cloth of Banton, discovered in Romblon and believed to be the oldest known burial textile in Southeast Asia, dating back to the 13th–14th century. It was woven using abaca fibers and dyed with natural pigments in a complex ikat pattern. This burial cloth was used to wrap the deceased, which tells us about early Filipino burial customs and the symbolic importance of textiles in their spiritual beliefs.

This artifact is important to Filipino identity because it shows our rich tradition of weaving and the deep spiritual connections our ancestors had with their environment. It also highlights the role of art in rituals and beliefs. The preservation of this cloth is a reminder of how skilled and culturally expressive early Filipinos were.
