Think about a story you like and consider the setting, where it's located by region and landscape, what time period, and what culture. In some cases, there might be several places/settings but think of the main one. Alternatively, you might think of somewhere you've been, an important place, that connects to a personal story from your life. Go the padlet on setting I've created for you and briefly share your thoughts on it and maybe include a picture that represents that place. If you want, you can even use a personal story! Complete it by October 7 for 2 bonus participation marks! Also make sure your name is on them so I know who to give the bonus marks.

The setting of Heart of Darkness takes place upon the river Thames in England. However, as Marlow starts his embedded narrative of his adventures into heart of Africa, along the Congo river, in an attempt to find Kurtz, we are captivated by the impressionism of light and dark settings that make the setting both a literal and internal representation of moral terror.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is set in WW II at a house next to camp Auschwitz. The story is written in a young, innocent boy's point of view who is living at the house and witnessing everything at the camp next door. Throughout the story, the author doesn't make a direct statement saying where the story takes place, but rather makes the reader figure it out themselves by key events that take place, being told by the innocent young boy who has no idea what is all actually happening.

Who slowly lose their minds after an idol is found and then discarded at sea. Only the lieutenant-commander manages to keeps his wits. After a mutiny damages systems important to the surfacing and submerging of the submarine, the lieutenant-commander discovers an underwater temple.

The setting takes place almost entirely within the confines of the submarine while submerged.

There is a place in Minden Hills called Kinark Outdoor Centre. It is a camp for children with special needs. Families can go there for two nights and relax, have fun, and reconnect with each other. Most of the children are on the autism spectrum and the camp is meant as a respite for the parents. When my family first arrived at Kinark I was quite stressed. Taking the children somewhere new, packing for everyone, having to drive for over 2 hours to get there, I was overwhelmed. This picture is of the view you see when you first arrive. Instantly I felt more relaxed. I felt calmer, and ready to handle the weekend with my children. I knew this place would restore my energy and it did. We have since returned twice as a family, and the children went once without the parents for a weekend. Knowing what this place was like for me, I felt I had no other option but to agree to send them. The setting is perfect for what it is used for, a place to relax and unwind, and just leave you worries at home.

It is a place where people and families go to enjoy themselves and get a beautiful view of the city. It is close by Istanbul where most people go. My family and I went there to experience this and it took about 12 hours to get there. When you arrive, it is the most beautiful thing and no camera can capture the beauty you would capture with your eyes. With many colourful hot air balloons in the air, it was a wonderful experience. We went on the hot air balloon and the view was breathtaking and you feel so calm when you are so high up

I went on a vacation with my family to California, USA. Of the many places I went to, the one I wish to use as an example of setting is the USS Iowa Battleship Museum. And since this was the first time I went on a warship - let alone a WWII battleship - I was expecting to be going in a maze. And oh man, what a journey!

Upon entering the museum, going the deck was quite spacious, as I could see the many buildings and ships going to and fro in the Los Angeles port. Passing the first massive gun turret on the front of the vessel, I traveled into the superstructure of the ship and found myself staring at claustrophobia-inducing warrens and corridors. There were many rooms left, right and center. Stairs and ladders leading up and down as if I was in a game of Snakes & Ladders. The hallway floors weren't even smooth; there were solid hurdles on some doorways, making it treacherous to the wandering eye. Among the hazards an untrained civilian like me can find are the extremely steep and narrow staircases. We bumped our shins on several steps, and looking down to the deeper levels of the ship did not help.

To make it brief, this continued on with us going inside and outside the superstructure many times throughout the tour. As a history and warfare enthusiast, this was an enjoyable experience, especially looking how intricate the warship was - such as movable rangefinders, man-sized shells and charges, towering ordnance, intricate analog computers - it amazes me how sailors operated this legendary vessel. And those stairs...

Across from the restaurant, there's this early 80s vintage look train station that is always busy though has been there since I was fifteen, Iduring the summer it is a view you don't want to miss, especially during golden hour.

There is a small city in Quebec called Gaspé that my parents took me to a few years ago. The area is breathtaking and I will never forget the scenery that I was able to experience there. The drive to Gaspé was long and tiring, but very pretty as we drove along the water, visiting many lighthouses that soared into the bright blue, summer skies. It was all worth it as soon as we drove through the tree covered, rolling hills and into the small city. The famous Percé rock towered over the city in the water, far from the shore, almost as if it watched over everything. We stayed at a cozy bed and breakfast there and one morning the light from the sun came right through our windows, waking us all up at 5am. We couldn't sleep and our breakfast wouldn't be ready for another few hours so the three of us left to go on a walk. We walked to the rocky beach where we watched the sun rise over Percé. It was so peaceful to just see the sky change as we picked up rocks or shells, sat on the boardwalk, or even on the swings in the empty park. The area still inspires me to this day and I have many paintings that I did of the rock, where I was so calm and happy. I can't wait until the day I go back and start painting the small city and its beauty once more.

There's just something about the noise from all the people and cars going by, and the hustle and bustle of the city that brings me immense peace and relaxes me.

I remember going out one night onto the balcony of my aunt's apartment, and I just sat out there listening to John Mayer for half an hour.

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series take place in Middle Earth, an incredible world created by J. R. R. Tolkien. This world is very intricate and as you read through the pages, a person can get lost in the beautiful scenery. This world also describes that various races and how they all coexist with each other. I also liked how maps were drawn so the reader can follow along with the journey.

~ Rebekah Mohammed

I remember reading about how Paul was on his bed and when he woke up he saw Annie starring right at him, watching him sleep! Then she starts threatening him and doing wicked things to him. When I reading this, I was imagining it in my head. Sometimes the most basic setting's are the most detailed of all because we all know how they would feel in real life if we were there. I love how King puts immersive details to the settings taken place in his books.

- Victor Refalo

In 2008, I went to Italy to an area called Cinque Terre(five lands). They are five beautiful villages built into the side of the rugged coastline overlooking the Ligurian Sea. It has no modern buildings and is connected by paths. Trains and boats are how they receive most of their goods there. Cars and trucks are rare. We did lots of hiking and eating. They are known for their pesto and it was amazing!
Lemons grow on trees around the villages and you can actually smell them as you wander.
The pizza and coffee was like no other I have tasted.
We stayed in Corniglia and the people in the village were so warm and welcoming. This experience was surreal, it was so beautiful. It engaged all senses. The perfect setting for any story.
Renee Soares

Just this past November, I booked a trip to New York City, Manhattan. I went on this trip strictly for the purpose of work/school. I had never had an desire to go there, based off of the description people give it. When I arrived at Laguardia Airport, I felt suffocated with the noise. Surrounding me was blaring horns, people laughing, screaming, arguing, exchanging banter. Amongst that was the hustle of bags, fast steps, and your classic "New Yorker" scurrying around me. When I settled in my hotel room, I was annoyed by the fact that the racket wasn't going to stop. All night I was listening to horns blaring, police sirens and busy bodies prancing the streets of Manhattan. However, by day two, after walking the streets and exploring Times Square, I found myself very accustomed to this way of life. The noise wasn't so bad anymore. By day four, I was sleeping soundly, despite the constant noise outside of my window, and by day five I was sad to leave.
New York was a place I never even envisioned myself visiting, in fact, It felt like a chore when I discovered I would have to visit there. Now I reflect, and I can't wait to find another excuse to go back.

Mary Estelle (Arden) Besner

In December '97 my family moved from Oakville, Ont. to Peoria, AZ. I was seven when we moved there and even though it was only three years spent in Arizona, to me it was the greatest time of my childhood.

Our house was on the end of the a row of streets with no neighbors across the road, just a concrete wall and a dusty farm that never seemed to grow anything. Because of this our street had very little traffic so we were always outside playing with the neighbors. At the end of our road was a park, dug into the ground so that any water would drain into the park. Rarely did it ever rain, so everything was a dry slightly dust covered town, and the grass in the park was always dead. Everyone always speaks of a dry heat in the desert and I never understood it until I was there, even though it was over 40c most summer days it never felt that hot, and as soon as the sun would set all the warmth would vanish instantly.

My years spent in Arizona were some of my best as I remember playing soccer, spending all day in the pool, and the family vacations to Las Vegas. I left in 2000 and have not been back, as much as I want to go back and share my memories with my Fiance I am hesitant that now seeing the world as an adult will change my perception.

Eric Dixon - 100671140

The Shadow of the Wind is a novel by Carlos Ruiz Zafron.

The novel is set in Barcelona slightly after the spanish civil war. I liked the setting because it was grim and gritty, the populace having just survived a civil war. There is a air of hopelessness and despair that is replaced by confidence and hope as the novel progresses. This in contrast to the main character as his hope is slowly consumed by revenge.

The Walking Dead takes place in a post-apocalyptic America and follows a group of survivors as they travel across the country trying to find a place where they can make a new home and be safe. It is set in present time, though with it being the apocalypse, it is difficult to know exactly how much time has passed in the story so far. The setting is gritty and desolate and everything you would expect the end of the world to look like, but that bleakness makes it even better when new settings and places are introduced. When the characters find a place to stay and it's clean, organized, and there's houses intact instead of falling apart, it really adds a level of hope to the story. These contrasting settings help to move the story along and add another layer. It's almost like the setting and landscape is another character with the significance it holds.

- Jen Carson

I grew up in Pakistan and spent 14 years of my childhood but for some reason I never felt home. The people were nice to us, shop owners was nice to my dad whenever me and him went to buy groceries, they would sometimes give me free chocolate as I remember vaguely. I didn't make a lot of friends growing up because I had severe asthma six months out of a year so it was really hard to make friends. Years went by and my asthma never got better, the doctors said that once I am fourteen years of age i will out grow this sickness. I was 13 years old when my mother informed us that we are getting sponsored to Canada and it will be soon. I was 14 years old and the sickness never went away, that same year we got accepted by Canadian government to migrate to Canada. Once we arrived in Canada I still had the same feeling as I had when we first migrated to Pakistan. But slowly as years went by, I never got my asthma back and never got sick with that severity. I finally realized i found my home because my body showed me by accepting it. I have friends now that I can see any time and I am able to live a normal life.

Jamal Aziz
100733729

To get to this waterfall we had to walk down 500 stairs to get to where the waterfall was. But I think what was worse was when we left we had to walk up all those stairs. The view of this waterfall was just amazing, it wasn't a huge but all the plants and greenery around it was just amazing. There were many locals and tourists visiting this waterfall to swim in the water surrounding and the river it went into.

This beach has so much meaning to my family and me. It's a special spot where my family comes together to eat, reminisce, and cherish life. My entire family is in Jamaica, so when they take the time to spend a day with me and my little family when we visit, it means the world. This beach has also been our meeting spot for many years. We eat, drink, talk, swim, relax, and play. My uncles always tell me stories of my grand-father and grand-mother and how my mom is a splitting image of her. They laugh and talk about years gone by. I get to catch up with my older cousins and my kids get to play with their cousins. All of life's stressors are forgotten in this single day. This beach will always have a special place in my heart. Whenever I hear Hellshire, I instantly get soft hearted and miss the sweet faces of my family.

Montgomery is actually a cousin from my Mom's side, so I have read the book and watched all the movies/plays. Of course the setting of this story is the gorgeous Prince Edward Island. Where there is rich red sand, old stone paths, and beautiful beaches where the water goes for miles! When on the beaches you can ten find towering light houses, and in some locations of PEI you can see the strong and architecturally satisfying Confederation Bridge. The island has so many historical landmarks that it often feels like you have gone back in time.

-Jessi Hales

The story in the film 8 Mile is one that has really made a lasting impression on me and a big part of that is the setting. 8 Mile takes place in Detroit, but more specifically in a poverty ridden, suburban area in the year 1995. The city is split by 8 mile, a road that basically splits the town in half by racial lines. The main character lives in a trailer park that is on one side of the city and dreams of becoming successful in the hip hop industry that is very popular on the other side of the city. The setting is very dreary. being that they're in a poor area, the cars are old and beat up, buildings are graffitied, there are often homeless people on the streets and everyone is dressed in tattered clothing. Also, a lot of the movie is filmed during the night time to kind of add an element of suspense and fearfulness for the audience.

-Brandon Melaragno

The setting mainly takes place in a private school, castle yet in modern times. With a large court yard of open green grasse leading toward a forest. This was very important to the story lines since the characters went through training on that terrain. Discovered characters truth even some lose. As well as church's attack where history books were used to better break down the conflit. Which is why I mainly like this setting the aspects of being surrounded in safe in environment. Although, all the characters of this book series were distraught. Also kind of bring me back to harry potter...

There's not a whole lot to it and I'm sure most people pass through it without giving it much attention. However, I think it's one of the most beautiful places. It's near Mont Tremblant, which makes for gorgeous scenery. It's full of small shops and little restraunts that line the streets. At night, the town lights up and is full of chatter. The air is fresh because of all the greenery and it all kind of feels like home.

Melanie Lennon

It is set during the "roaring 1920s", a time of rapid economic growth for the United States. In each location are reflected the different faces of the era; the excess and superficiality of Long Island vs the exhaustion and decay of New York. While in one setting there are mansions where champagne flows and jazz music rolls till the wee hours, in the other there is working class squalor. Even within the Long island community there are cultural differences; the West Egg families are considered "Old Money" and East Egg families are "Nouveau Riche/New Money".

Just standing still for more than five minutes felt like your skin was on fire. My favorite memory of our trip was chartering a fishing boat. We went out into the blue ocean waves in search of a monster fish. The water was rough and the boat listed on its side. As we were out on the water and looking back at the island, it was amazing how small the land looked and how great the ocean is. The scene of mountains in the background and nothing but water all round was truly magnificent.
Samuel Shake

My favorite memory we shared as a family was Duns River Falls where you got to climb an actual waterfall, as well as Margarita Ville, where you got to go down a huge water slide that lead out into the ocean. Once in the ocean, you swim out to water trampolines where I spent 4 hours jumping and playing with my siblings. They had amazing food and live music once the sun went down. The part I disliked the most was their Ketchup. It tasted horrible. But it was a great adventure and I would defiantly recommend Montego Bay, Jamaica. 5-stars from me.

-Ashley Rose

Before the story, Moon Festival is a festival around Asia to celebrate the moon ! We believe that on that day, the moon appears to be the fullest and the brightest of the year. The date of the Moon Festival changes every year depends on which day it'd be the fullest and brightest. In one of the annual Moon Festivals in Taiwan (around 2010), I remember being in the night market. The crowds were all gathered up and was waiting to ignite their lanterns and let it float into the night sky. On the counts of 3, the crowds all let go of their lanterns at the same time. And the view was magnificent. It was one of the most beautiful view you'll ever seen in your life! That was one of my favourite stories/memories.

-- Yu-Tung Cheng

She travelled over to Canada when she was 8 years old by boat, but she continued to travel back and visit her homeland every few years. In June of 2017, I got the opportunity to go there myself. Scotland is a region of rugged and beautiful landscapes, misty locks, and old stone buildings. When we went, we travelled to my Grandma's favourite places. Seeing it in real life helped me visuals stories she had told us. There was the misty Isle of Skye lined with the rugged mountains and dark clouds. Her home town of Paisley, and the brick townhomes that lined the street. We discovered her story, but also so many other stories intertwined with the history of each new place we went.

-Somiya Brown

Arthur Conan Doyle's famous works of Sherlock Holmes takes place in London, England in the late 19th century (1890's). The Holmes novels are some of my favourite books to read, not only because its SHERLOCK but because the time period Doyle has them in is one of my favourites to read about, (granted it was basically the same years he wrote them in but you get my point). Doyle has also gone out of his way to absolutely PACK Sherlock's flat (221B Baker Street - a REAL address, by the way) with as much unusual things as possible. Doyle goes out of his way to make fiction look like reality by adding in details to make things seem more real, so the mess at Sherlock's home makes sense; it is his home, of course it's not going to be immaculate. It also helps to paint a better picture of the character himself. Of course, the need to make it all too real doesn't just stop at the apartment; there's landmarks and the transportation system of London at the time as well as other cities and countries that are referenced.
- Tayler Stiles

Welcome to Night Vale is a fiction podcast paired up with two novels that I just adore! I thought of this when it comes to setting because I have actually written an essay about Night Vale as a setting a few years ago. Night Vale is a city in a desert, in which so many weird and unbelievable things happen. What I love about the setting is the visuals they are able to paint with words when it comes to having a small city in a desert. There's beautiful hills, sand dunes, and cacti in this environment, while they are still able to take advantage of the fact this town is big enough to have normal stores and restaurants like an Arby's. This gives the listener/reader a beautiful image of a colourful setting sky or starry night, while walking home from something as normal and local as a pizza place. I love this mix of organic and unexplored with the very common and usual amenities of life.

-Kayla Price

Back in March I went to Los Angeles to visit my family that lives there. It was so beautiful! I love the mountains, the ocean, and downtown. The weather was also very nice. I think part of the reason why I love Los Angeles so much is that I was there with a lot of family, and family has always been very important to me. I was able to picture myself living in Los Angeles with a family of my own one day.

-Madison Ramirez

Growing up, I have always admired cherry blossoms and what they mean - life is short, so enjoy it before it's too late. While I always expressed so much love and interest in going to see the cherry blossoms in downtown Toronto, nobody really cared enough to make the time to come down with me. It just wasn't something I wanted to experience it alone. Two years ago, my boyfriend happily agreed to take me and we enjoyed it immensely. So much so, that we decided to make it a yearly tradition. The blossoms are so incredibly beautiful, that 'beautiful' isn't even a proper word to describe them. I always feel at peace, and as if I'm in some fairy land. I can't describe exactly how I feel, but it's truly one of my favourite places to be. This past spring, my boyfriend took me again to see the cherry blossoms, and there he proposed to me. Now, this park in the springtime, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, will forever be cemented in my head as one of the most beautiful places in the world to me.

- Nadine Permaul

Dominican Republic

Back in May I went with a group of friends and family to the Dominican Republic. It was initially a last minute idea to go as a celebration for finishing our first year of college, and a annual family trip. I always wanted to go to the Dominican Republic but never did until we all decided to get up and go, which was the best thing I've ever done as it was truly a trip of a lifetime. The reason why this is an important place is because I have an uncle who lives in the Dominican and I hadn't met him until that day in May which is why I connect with this setting/place on a personal level. I loved the palm trees, friendly people, beaches, and the culture, learning their language was amazing. The weather was always wonderful, I think the reason I loved it so much is because a part of me has lived there and finally being able to connect the pieces, finally helped me as a person. I am now visiting Dominican yearly and cannot wait to return.
- Julia Porter

Central East Correctional Facility - Tristan Sharma 100692938

On December 26, 2015, my Mother and Father were having a heated argument. After about 10-15 minutes of screaming, yelling, and name calling my Father left my house, and did not come back. This had happened in the past but this time it was different. I did not hear from him for about two weeks which was odd (he would usually text me daily regardless of the situation at home). After two weeks of not hearing from him, he texted me randomly saying: "I love you son". That was the last time I communicated with him for a while. I was 15 at the time and did not know what was happening, all my mother told me was that my Father was at a "rehabilitation centre" which I believed because I had no reason not to. Two months had passed without me seeing or communicating with my Father until one weekend, my Mother took my two sisters and I to visit him. Upon arrival to the "rehabilitation center" I began to ask questions: "Why is it surrounded by tall fences and barbed wire?", "Why does it say correctional facility? What is that?". My Mother then broke down into tears, explaining to us what was really happening. My Father was charged and convicted with fraud over $5000 (an indictable offence in Canada) and sent to Central East Correctional Facility in Lindsay, Ontario. For the next six months, the only times I saw and spoke to my Father were through a glass window, on a dirty, worn down telephone. After he was released (on probation), things were not the same; prison had taken its toll on his mental health, but also affected his ability to land a job, and live a normal life again. When people think of a setting with a personal story behind it, they typically resort to something happy and exciting. I chose to share this story because it inspired me. Visiting my Father at the facility, seeing what he went through, and living with the repercussions of incarceration helped me decide that when I grow older, I would like to pursue a career in the corrections field, and improve the lives of people and families that have been in my position. Prison should be a lesson in my opinion, not the be-all-end-all of a perfectly good life.

- Tristan Sharma 100692938

Shadows of the Apt series by Adrian Tchaikovsky

I really liked this series by Adrian Tchaikovsky, (another I found completely by accident...). It was an interesting mash-up of fictional cultures and historic time periods, with diverse lands, technologies (wielded by the Apt, who are unable to comprehend magic), and magics (used by the Inapt, who are unable to comprehend technology). Political drama aside, I enjoyed the characters' time in one of the capital cities the most - Collegium, home to the scientific elite Beetle Kinden in the heart of the Lowlands, an industrious people reminiscent of the ancient Romans. Their city is bright and open-minded, filled with technological and architectural wonders - steam trains and trolleys, airships, and the Great College at its centre. I think stories like this, that take bits of truth from historical civilization, make the more fantastic aspects of their setting that much more believable. If the Roman Empire hadn't fallen, would they have engineered such wonders?

- Taylor Arruda

I would like to share the moment when i was standing on Indira Gandhi International Airport and ready to part from family to come to the country of my dreams Canada. Thousands of things were going in mind at that particular moment which i think i can't express. There the thing is alot of people are meeting their families after long time. But on other hand, alot were parting from family to go thousand kilometers away for there futures. It was so hard for me to leave my parents as they need my support but they also wants to excel me in my future. I left and boarded the flight and when i came to this country i notice a whole lot of culture change as India is so much traditional as well as modern. but this country is different as here life is always hustled up and we are buzzing in it. I didn't realized when i got caught in this life and days and days my parents didn't hear from me. One day my mom was so sick and i am busy and not talking her over phone and said her can't talk now. In return , she said i want nothing from you . i just need to know that are you ok and all is going well in your life. that moment i realized i didn't give time to my parents and after that it is never happened.
