Interest groups: The top interest group who donated to Carlos Curbelo is NextEra Energy. They donated $34,200. They are a clean energy company based in Florida. Another company that is donating to Curbelo is Coca-Cola. They donated $20,700. They are a drink company who are based in Atlanta, Georgia. The top interest group who donated to Mucarsel-Powell is Emily's List. They donated $82,174. They donate money to pro-choice female candidates. They are based in Washington D.C.. Another interest group who donated to Mucarsel-Powell is AmeriPAC: The Fund for a Greater America. They donate money to democratic candidates for congress.

Clinton or Trump: In the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton won this district by more than 16 percentage points.

Endorsements: Some people and groups that have endorsed Debbie Mucarsel-Powell include the Miami Herald, Common Defense, Planned Parenthood, Joe Biden, Lori Berman, and many more. Curbelo is endorsed by and groups such as ConservAmerica, ClearPath Action Fund, Humane Society, Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions, and many more. Endorsements matter because it gives them money and people who like the groups that endorse them would be more likely to vote for that candidate.

Issues: One major issue they are debating is immigration. Muscarel-Powell says that she wants to fix the immigration system by protecting the asylum process, creating a path to citizenship for DREAMers, and allowing tps holders to become permanent residents. She believes that immigrants make our country stronger. Curbelo also believes that we have a broken immigration system and that we should help the victims of the broken immigration system. He says that "Our nation has the right and responsibility to secure its borders". Curbelo believes that we should know who is coming in and out of our country, insist all border traffic be legal, help fill jobs Americans are not seeking with immigrants, and we should establish a path for illegal immigrants to become citizens if they have abided by our laws and contributed to the economy. Another major issue they are debating is healthcare. Muscarel-Powell believes that we should protect people with pre-existing conditions, lower drug costs, expand access to health care, and secure medicare for seniors. Curbelo believes that the ACA is deeply flawed because it is expensive, it limits plan options, it considers 30 hours a full work week, and it cuts funding for medicare. He does however believe that there are good aspects of it such as the ability to keep young people on their parents health plans until they are 26, guaranteed coverage for pre-existing conditions, and protections against gender discrimination. He believes that health care should be accessible to every hard working American. One more major issue they are debating is education. Muscarel-Powell says she wants to invest in our public school system so that everyone has access to good quality education. She also wants to make college more affordable by expanding financial aid programs and lowering interest rates on student loans. One more thing she would like to do is create a program that provides free community college. Curbelo says that he also wants to make sure that everyone has access to good quality education, however he wants to do this by supporting an accountability that does things like encourage low-income families to enroll children in childhood programs, working to ensure that schools are providing clear paths to quality jobs, and strengthening career and technical programs. He also wants to encourage financial counseling so people can choose the best path for them.

Our Prediction

We predict that Debbie Mucarsel-Powell will win. Our first piece of evidence is that she is ahead in the polls like the Siena College/New York Times poll and the GBA Strategies poll. This means that people like her and that a lot of people are going to vote for. Polls give an accurate look at what the election could look like. Another piece of evidence we have is that the district is more liberal. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the district by more than 16 percentage points. Also, the district is made up 70% hispanic people, who traditionally tend to vote democrat. This means that if do what they usually do Debbie Mucarsel-Powell will win. One reason that Debbie Mucarsel-Powell may not win is because Carlos Curbelo is an incumbent. It is easier for an incumbent to win because they have staffers, money, time, and lots of people recognize them. This means that he could win because he has all those advantages. While that evidence is true, it is more likely that Mucarsel-Powell will win because she can still earn those things with hard work.
