It is definitely something to aim for in order to have a good work/ life balance. The 8 hours of 'what you will' might at times include more work, or more sleep!
It is an aspiration, to be taken as advice. The phrase comes from when workers in the industrial revolution were sick of having to work long hours. I think it is a good rule of thumb, and helps us to remember that work is not everything!

Unless you have very neat handwriting, then use the computer to type up your text.
Is it fine to have hand drawn plans and sections for Stopover?

Yes - this is absolutely fine, I predict the majority of you will have hand drawn orthographic drawings. Make sure to scan your drawings in carefully. There are large format scanners on the 6th floor of Chatham on top of the large format printers which are free to use (or most commercial printers will scan in for a cost).

How do you determine the north point in the plan?

The north point will always point to north, whichever way your plan is orientated. If you building is diagonally orientated, but you have drawn it so it is perpendicular and parallel to the piece of paper, then the north arrow would be diagonal. However if you drew your building so that it was placed diagonally on the piece of paper, your north arrow would point up the page (to the north!)

What is the best app for creating portfolio? Does the portfolio have to be on InDesign? I can't afford InDesign and I also don't know how to use it. Can we make our portfolio on powerpoint?

Powerpoint is not the best app for creating portfolios. It is much better for presentation and lecture slides, but not for portfolios, as they include a lot more text and images, and are for a different purpose. The best application to use in InDesign There are some free alternatives to InDesign. See this blog post for some examples. The best way to learn indesign is by using it. This is your first portfolio, so give it a go and then take on advice at your tutorial on Monday 6th January ahead of the deadline.

Can I draw the stopover project plans and sections at 1:20?

The brief specifically states 1:10, to allow you to draw the detail of the interior, including possessions and materials, as well as the atmosphere of the STOPOVER home. It might be helpful to also draw a section or plan at 1:50, or 1:100 to show the context - where your proposal sits on the existing building. If there is a very specific reason which has been discussed with your tutor, then please take their advice on the scale.
