Just a few reasons it was interested in doing my essay on the orangutan were; Their intelligence, they're endangered, and they're the only surviving species of the subfamily Ponginae....

Orangutan's are made up of 2 different species.... The Sumatran and the Bornean. Being Native to Malaysia and Indonesia, they typically reside in the rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra. Orangutan's name meaning "Person/people of the forest" are classified in the genus Pongo. They're considered to be the most intelligent of the great apes and primates. Orangutans are also the only surviving species of the Subfamily Ponginae.

Orangutans are the most arboreal of the great apes and spend most of their time in trees. Their hair is typically reddish-brown,or a yellowish-orange. Females and males differ in body size/mass, and dominant males have distinctive cheek pads in sides of mouths. Cheek pads are used for long mating calls, and to scare off rivalry. "People of the Forest" are the most solitary of the great apes, with social bonds occurring primarily between mothers and their dependent offspring, who stay together for the first two years.

The main component of the Orangutan's diet is fruit. Though, on occasion they will eat vegetation, bark, honey, insects, and sometimes even bird eggs.
