Latinos Not talking about Mental Health

Personally I can say one contributing fact about Afro Latinos or Latinos not speaking about mental health is stereotyping! Not just by our family or loved ones but especially outsiders looking in. Ever been in a room when a melanin colored teen/adult (we call it “morena”) is seen or heard speaking Spanish? Ay díos mio. (OMG) The kind of questions, looks, and body language after is harsh. A lot of people judge. Many points she addresses is very true in Latinx homes. I myself is victim to several points she made, almost all.

Social Phobia Associated With Latinx teens Anxiety and Depression.

I want to elaborate more from Shannon’s post on social phobias. I can only speak facts on what I know being as though one side of my family is Puerto Rican. Being Latino, no matter where you are from, most countries if not all, are HUGE on appearances. Especially Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Columbia, and Mexico. Not every family cares but boy oh boy, in each how you look is very extreme. Especially Latino females having plastic surgery at young ages, your skin color being too dark or too light, your hair not silky enough, or don’t have frizz/kinky/curls. Latino parents believe in going out in the world early to help provide for your household because back in the day that’s what they were taught. Get it how you live. Some moms treat their daughters as queens, show them manners, self respect, and is big on feminine hygiene. While others force them in to the adult world early, don’t parent them properly, prepare them mentally, and force them to get jobs to help pay bills. That’s why you see in shows like Queen of the south, Money heist, etc is all bout kingpins, drug lords, and young female prostitutes. In reality that’s actually how a lot of Latin countries evolve. That’s where depression and anxiety comes in with most Latino teens because they feel like “they are not good enough.” Many Latino families don’t believe in therapy because “your family is all you need.” They believe in confiding in your family and not others. Your fears, anxiety, and depression are de el Diablo (from the devil).

I really appreciate how the group made sure to highlight the different "types" of anxiety disorders - often times they are generalized into one or two things and can be misdiagnosed and mistreated.

I also like the infographics that the group provided - sometimes that's an easier way to digest information than it is reading bullet points. I found the statistics re: latinx teens and these disorders to be particularly troubling, and I think and hope this is an issue that will continue to be addressed in Philadelphia and the US.

Lastly - Jasimen - thank you for sharing your story!

This is a very big eye opener to read and gain some clarity in another culture's view on mental health. It is said to say that I have seen health care professionals in my years dismissing or brushing off Latinos from receiving the help they need due to stereotyping them and assuming that they can not afford the help that they seek. I did not know in the Latinos took on appearances so heavily. That was shocking to read and I do get it. Being so close knit typically it seems like what Jasmine stated that they feel like they should be all you need but sometimes you need an outside person to help guide you through your situation without passing any biasness. We need to start being mindful of our "traditional" beliefs and open the door for free and clear communication.

This topic was a great choice because our mental health is so important. I think it's critical for people to be more aware of the importance of mental health and seeking treatment, especially in communities that are less accepting of it. Bringing awareness to the issue is the first step in addressing it. I think the information in this padlet is really helpful in the understanding why the rates of mental health disorders are so high amongst Latinx teens, especially the vice video which really highlights the pressure teens with undocumented parents face. Also, I appreciate that the different types of anxiety disorders are discussed, and that normals level of anxiety and anxiety disorders are explained and differentiated from each other. In addition, I admire that resources for mental health are provided on this page.

I enjoyed the content provided in this padlet, as it seemed like almost everyone within the group could relate to anxiety disorders. I especially could resinate with JasimenH's comment when she spoke about how you can be latino and not look latino enough. I've personally struggled with not looking black enough and not talking black enough, and it is a terrible feeling to feel like you don't belong or fit in due to being too light or having the wrong hair texture. I also come from a family where they strongly believe that family is all you need, and counseling is totally unnecessary. Thank you for your content guys !

The Puerto Rican post interests me a lot since I am of Puerto Rican decent. Many people don't seem to understand that Latin people come in all different shapes and sizes and no one person looks more Latin than another. Feeling less connected in Latin families is a common thing that even I discuses with my other Latin friends since a lot of younger generations feel like they don't belong in there families. This padlet highlights a lot of what makes Latin teens develop anxiety and is very informative, it even highlights everyday anxiety and the difference between it and anxiety disorder.

For my future daughter I love how it embraces another culture and it allows me to know how to deal with anxiety if she ever has to face it. Counseling services and self care for instance.

What I continously learn about different ethnic backgrounds is that people really are universal. This padlet shed light on this point. People are universally the same than they are different. Many things mentioned about Latin culture, I can relate to as a woman of color. The struggles within your ethnic group such as skin color and how the lighter you are it's perceived to be better somehow or being to light or too dark places a stigma upon you as well. These ideologies are unfortunately implanted in the minds of far too many ethnic groups. It is my hope that generations to come are taught to love themselves and not look to others for validation or permission to exist as they are.

I really enjoyed the information on this padlet. I am of the Latino ethnic background, and we do experience a lot of anxiety disorders. I found this information very helpful because it explains how and why teens feel like they experience anxiety disorders. I am Puerto Rican and it seems like some people still have an issue about race. no matter the ethnic background. Mental Health is a big factor with anxiety disorders and is something everyone should take seriously and try to not let others bring you down or talk down about you. I also like the list of different anxiety disorders and the difference between them. Great Job!

Let me start by saying that mental health is real and important ! These are things that happen in real life. There are treatments that work, but first we have to bring awareness to the issues. I didn't know the rates of mental health disorders are so high until now. The information in this padlet gave me more insight especially about the different types of anxiety disorders. I appreciate the explanation of the types of phobias because I didn't know they exist . Overall I think the group did a good job
