How Belgian chocolate is under threat from international takeovers and 'chocolate gangsters'

9-6-19
Belgian chocolate has become a 3.5 billion dollar industry, and makes up 9% all of Belgium's food sales. For the Belgian people, their chocolate is not only a major money source, it is also a source of dignity for the country. The new big issue for Belgian chocolate is the issue of international takeover of Belgium's chocolate. For Belgian chocolatiers, the market prices are rising quickly and the international demand for Belgian chocolate is growing. Many foreign companies want to invest in these chocolate companies, possibly even making the chocolate in that country, like Godiva chocolate, which is now made in Pennsylvania. The chief executive of the famous Belgium chocolate company, Neuhaus, stated "“It is essential that Neuhaus is 100 per cent Belgian. It adds pride to important details, and it’s important to ensure consistent quality.” Next, there is the issue of "chocolate gangsters". These are chocolatiers that will put giant signs on store windows proclaiming to have "real Belgian chocolate", when really it is really nothing close to real Belgian chocolate. How can a person tell if it is real Belgian chocolate? It seems that the "chocolate gangsters" are the big brand name stores that sell the supposed Belgian chocolate for a £1 with giant signs about the chocolate. The real chocolatiers are the "mom and pop shops" without giant signs about the "real" chocolate.

Sources:
https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/belgian-chocolate-crisis-threat-food-a8409771.html

9-13-19
After the killing of Haitian journalist, Rospide Petion, many journalists in Haiti are ordering for police protection. As Rospide drove home Monday evening in a van owned by Radio Sans Fin, which is a privately-owned radio news station, Rospide was shot and killed by an unnamed gunman. Israel Jacky Cantave, who is the director of information and programming of the radio station, Radio Sans Fin, had been receiving many aggressive and dangerous calls about the issues they were covering on their radio station. “‘The brazen shooting of radio journalist Pétion Rospide highlights the precarious and dangerous conditions for the Haitian press,’" said CPJ South and Central America Program Coordinator Natalie Southwick in New York.” The reason that so many of these journalists are being attacked is because they are being accused of being “pro-government”. The shooting of the journalist, Petition came after a string of violent protests in the streets of Haiti. These protests are demanding for the resignation of Haitian president, Jovenel Moise. Before Moise became president, he received 33 million gourdes, which is roughly $700,000, to work on the roads in Haiti, but instead, he did nothing but “grow bananas”. Other reports of journalists being attacked are journalists being hit with rocks, and a photographer with Le Nouvelliste was attacked with a rubber bullet.

Sources:
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/06/journalists-haiti-demand-protection-reporter-killing-190611183001621.html

https://cpj.org/2019/06/radio-sans-fin-petion-rospide-killed-haiti.php

https://www.npr.org/2019/06/11/731640235/protesters-demand-resignation-of-haitian-president-over-corruption-allegations

French Heat Wave

Padlet three

This past summer, France saw temperatures as high as 114 degrees. This temperature beat the previous record which was under 105 degrees in 1947. This heatwave took many tourists by surprise. In France, and in Europe, it is very common to have un-air-conditioned homes and buildings, and many tourists to France this year did not even consider buildings not having air conditioning. “We were not expecting this, so when we booked our Airbnb, we literally didn’t check that it doesn’t have air conditioning,” said Sampada Jadhav, 32, sitting under the trees at the Jardin du Palais Royal with her spouse Jay Ghag. During France’s Pride Parade in June, patches of asphalt melted during the parade. The Jardins du Trocadero, which is a giant fountain, was turned into a swimming pool as many people swam around to cool off from the heatwave. The main unfortunate side effect of this heatwave was that more than 1,500 people passed away this summer. As sad as these deaths were, they thankfully did not come close to the horrible death toll in the summer heatwave of 2003, in which 15,000 people passed away. During the summer heatwave, France's Environment Minister Élisabeth Borne sent out advice to people telling them to avoid traveling.

Sources:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/sep/09/summer-heatwaves-in-france-killed-1500-says-health-minister

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/tourists-forced-adapt-europe-waits-relief-record-breaking-heat-n1024921

https://www.newsweek.com/summer-heat-wave-climate-change-killed-1500-france-1458205

No More Homeschool in Switzerland

Padlet four
In 2017, when a mother applied for permission to homeschool her son, she was promptly rejected of the opportunity to home school her child by the school system. (“Federal Courts Rules against Homeschooling” Swissinfo. 16 Septemeber 2019). “Switzerland’s highest court has ruled that parents do not have a constitutional right to provide school-aged children with private lessons at home. The decision reinforces the right of cantons to establish very restrictive rules, even bans on homeschooling.” (“Federal Courts Rules against Homeschooling” Swissinfo. 16 Septemeber 2019). The mother took her application to the federal court where it was rejected again. The upset mother then stated that taking away this right was equivalent to taking away the constitutional right to privacy. (“Switzerland Supreme Court Denies Mother’s Right to Homeschool her Son” CBN News. 21 September 2019). The court then denied her claim by stating “constitutional right to a private life does not relate to homeschooling.” (“Switzerland Supreme Court Denies Mother’s Right to Homeschool her Son CBN News. 21 September 2019). So why does Switzerland have such an issue with parents homeschooling their children? Franziska Peterhans, who works at the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, says that “Not every family can afford the resources needed to teach their children at home, so it creates inequalities in society," she said. "Many children who are homeschooled have less interaction with their peers outside the family, so are less socialized.". (“Switzerland Supreme Court Denies Mother’s Right to Homeschool her Son CBN News. 21 September 2019). The issue of parental homeschooling is an issue of equality. Switzerland wants all families and students to have an equal access to schooling.

Sources:
https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/education-choices_federal-court-rules-against-homeschooling/45231744

https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2019/september/switzerland-supreme-court-denies-mothers-right-to-homeschool-her-son

Padlet five
Nuit Blanche or "sleepless night" is an event that occurs each year on October 5th. Nuit Blanche runs from 7 pm to 7 am on the first Saturday of October. ("What is Nuit Blanche?" Time Out). This event is like a giant arts festival. It's a way for the French to spend a whole evening celebrating the arts. There is a parade from 7 pm to 11 pm and then the various artists set up booths for people to walk around and visit. ("Nuit Blanche 2019: What's planned for Paris' sleepless night?" The Local fr 4 October 2019). During this festival, the roads in Paris get shut down. This festival even gives the people of Paris the chance to bike or dance on the périphérique, which is roughly a 21.7-mile-long highway that surrounds the city. It's one of the busiest roads in all of Europe. ("What is the périphérique?" Fat Tire Tours 26 March 2015). During the Nuit Blanche, two paths are set up, for runners, throughout the city that stops by some of Paris' biggest cultural sites, such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Théâtre du Châtelet, and the Louvre ("Nuit Blanche 2019: What's planned for Paris' sleepless night?" The Local fr 4 October 2019). The concept of Nuit Blanche has spread to 10 other places in Europe and 7 around the world.

Padlet six
Mac the Moose is a giant 32-foot tall moose statue, which of course is in Saskatchewan, Canada. Mac was built in 1984 by artist, Don Foulds to attract tourists. Mac was eventually moved to Thatcher Drive, just off of the Trans- Canada Highway (Mac the Moose) Mac is made out of a steel frame, metal mesh, and four layers of cement. (Mac the Moose) Just recently, the city realized that Mac was not the tallest moose statue in the world. A silver moose statue in Norway was beating Mac by approximately 30 centimeters. (World-record Rack). Mac had antlers, but they were pretty small. “Late Night Show” host Stephen Colbert even joked that Mac the moose actually looked like “Mac the paper mache dog” (World-record Rack). Between Colbert’s comment and the Norweigan moose that was beating Mac in height, the Saskatchewan people set out to get Mac a new, taller set of antlers. Rion White, who is a local taxidermist, offered to build Mac’s new set of antlers. Mr. White approximated that Mac’s new antlers were about 2-3 meters in size and he was a little afraid that they weren’t even going to fit on Mac. Luckily the new antlers fit Mac and Rion White was very excited. (World-record Rack). Now Mac has reclaimed the title of the world’s largest moose statue.

Source:
https://www.coastmountainnews.com/trending-now/world-record-rack-sask-crew-crowns-mac-the-moose-statue-with-new-antlers/

https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/mac-the-moose

Black Panther Update

Padlet seven
Roughly a month ago in September, a six-month-old female black panther was seen lurking on French rooftops and was reported to officials. The panther was discovered walking on top of the resident’s gutters. (“Cat Burglar” AP News) Luckily, the panther was caught and was taken to Maubeuge Zoo, which is on the border of Belgium. When zoo officials arrived to work on Tuesday, September 24th, they discovered that the panther had been stolen, only five days after it was taken to the zoo. The pen that the panther was in had been forcibly opened. (“Black panther stolen from zoo..” Independent) Maubeuge police have determined that this panther was “specifically targeted by thieves”. Police have a theory that the panther might have been stolen by his previous owner. Forensic scientists have taken fingerprints from the zoo and inspected the camera footage to see if the thieves could be determined.(“Panther captured in France…” N World). I am unsure whether the police have determined who the owner is or if they have caught the owner. Many sources say that police are still looking for the owner, but only one source says that the owner has been caught. Unfortunately, I checked several different sources and it appears that the panther has not been found. It doesn’t look like there are any leads currently in this case.
Sources:
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/black-panther-stolen-maubeuge-zoo-armentieres-france-lille-a9118491.html

https://www.apnews.com/f65587dd326240e0b0b456e01433451a

https://www.thenational.ae/world/europe/panther-captured-in-france-rooftop-rescue-is-stolen-from-zoo-1.915161

(“Grace Kelly’s Grandson…” Town and Country). Louis and Charlotte met at a university in Cannes, in 2011, and said that their love was “love at first sight”. (“Inside the Latest Royal Wedding…” Vogue). The couple had a very small, private ceremony in the Prince’s Palace’s halls. For the private celebration, Charlotte Casiraghi wore a silk jumpsuit by designer Rosa Clara. (“Inside the Latest Royal Wedding…” Vogue). Then the couple continued their celebration in a much more public matter in the St. Nicolas Cathedral, which is where Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III back in 1956. (“Grace Kelly’s Grandson…” Town and Country). For the public ceremony, Charlotte wore a silk dress which was designed by Atelier Boisanger and Pauline, her sister-in-law-to-be. (“Inside the Latest Royal Wedding…” Vogue). The St. Nicolas Catherdral is where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III’s funerals took place. Louis Ducret was very close to his later grandfather so he felt it was important to have the ceremony there. "This will be our way of associating him with our happiness. My grandfather was a man I admired. I was very close to him." (“Grace Kelly’s Grandson…” Town and Country).

Padlet nine
Bicky Burger, which is a popular Belgian hamburger that consists of pork, chicken, and horse meat, is now under fire for a very controversial advertisement (“Bicky Burger” Taste Atlas). The advertisement showed a man punching a woman because she brought him a fake Bicky Burger. The point of the advertisement was to show that Bicky Burger’s are sold in green boxes, not white boxes like the one that the woman was bringing the man (“Bicky Burger…” The Brussels Times). This advertisement obviously did not go well. Many Belgian politicians stated that the advertisement was “sickening” and “irresponsible” (“Bicky Burger removes…” BBC News). Other comments were made that this ad was “misogynistic”, “disgusting”, and “violent” (“Bicky Burger…” The Brussels Times). Goodlife Foods, which is the Dutch company that produces Bicky Burgers, later stated that they regretted this post and eventually deleted it. The company also released a statement that said, “ We had no intention of inciting violence,” (“Bicky Burger removes…” BBC News). Bicky Burger’s marketing agent, Tom Sevens stated, “We do not want to promote violence against women and strongly condemn it,”. He went on to say that the other main point of this advertisement was that buying or selling “fake” Bicky Burger’s is not done (“Bicky Burger…” The Brussels Times).

Sources:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-49998664?intlink_from_url=https://www.bbc.com/news/topics/cz4pr2gdgrdt/belgium&link_location=live-reporting-story

https://www.brusselstimes.com/belgium/72278/bicky-burger-criticised-for-misogynistic-advertising-campaign/

https://www.tasteatlas.com/bicky-burger

Padlet ten
Geneva, which is located in the southern region of Switzerland, is putting a ban on dirty cars to help stop pollution in the city. This ban officially goes into effect on January 15th, 2020 and will be enforced during Geneva’s smog alerts (Swiss Info “Banning Dirty Cars…”). The system works by a set of color-coded stickers on the back of cars. These stickers, which range from grey, for the “least ecological models” to green for “electric vehicles and those that run on hydrogen”, represent the car’s potential to add more pollution to the air (MenaFN “Banning Dirty Cars…”). During the smog alerts, cars with grey stickers, the “least ecological models” will not be allowed to be in the city from 6 am-10 pm (MenaFN “Banning Dirty Cars…”). If the smog continues, the same ban will be applied to the other sticker levels depending on how bad the smog gets (MenaFN “Banning Dirty Cars…”). If a driver ignores the smog alerts and goes into the city with a “banned” sticker, they can see fine as large as $503. The ticketing will begin on April 1st (Swiss Info “Banning Dirty Cars…”). Geneva is the first city in Switzerland to begin this program and Germany and France have already begun a “similar legislation” (MenaFN “Banning Dirty Cars…”).

Sources:
https://menafn.com/1099240018/Banning-dirty-cars-to-help-fight-Genevas-smog
https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/swiss-first_banning-dirty-cars-to-help-fight-geneva-s-smog/45353700

Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon

Padlet eleven
For many years in Cameroon, there has been a language divide in this country between the English speakers and the French speakers and there has not been any conflict. Roughly 80% of people in Cameroon speak French, while the other 20% speak English (Washington Post “Divided by Language”). Just in the last two years, the language division has brought Cameroon to a “civil war” (Washington Post “Divided by Language”). The great divide began in 2016 when civil servants, such as teachers or lawyers, began to fight the use of French in Cameroonian classrooms and courts (BBC “Cameroon’s Conflict…”). There have been roughly 3,000 deaths, 50,000 refugees, and 500,000 internally displaced people (The Conversation “Why Cameroon must move..”). Now the English speakers want to create their own independent country, which they call “Ambazonia” (Washington Post “Divided by Language”). The government is claiming that the “Ambazonian” people have tortured citizens and attacked the government forces, which caused the government to reciprocate the attacks on the "Ambazonian" people (Washington Post “Divided by Language”). On the English speaking side, they claim that the Cameroonian government forces often shot unarmed citizens and burned down the English speakers’ homes (Washington Post “Divided by Language”).

Sources:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-49931662

http://theconversation.com/why-cameroon-must-move-beyond-dialogue-to-solve-its-anglophone-crisis-125241

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/world/cameroon-anglophone-crisis/

Sensory- Friendly Parades

Padlet twelve
Although people without autism do not think about it, Christmas can be a difficult holiday for people with autism. If they want to go see a parade, there are often flashing lights, loud music, and crowded areas. Now, many Canadian towns are starting to provide sensory-friendly sections in their Christmas parades so that everyone can enjoy the parades (CTV News “St. Johns the latest city…”). One town that has been starting the sensory-friendly sections in the parades and has been in the news most often is St. Johns, Newfoundland. The plan is to have a portion of the parade route to be sensory-friendly. From Walter Street to the intersection between Adelaide and Queens Street, the people participating in the parade will lower their music, not blast horns, and all of the marching bands will only march, and not play their music (CBC “St. Johns Christmas Parade…”). Many parents, who have children with autism, are very excited about these sensory-friendly parade sections. One mother said that their family usually plans their trip to the parade after the firetrucks or other loud vehicles with sirens have passed. Now, they will be able to have a sensory-friendly zone so that they can see the entire parade. (CTV News “St. Johns the latest city…”). One man who works with the downtown St. John’s commission stated, “This sensory-friendly zone is just a natural step in the inclusion process for the parade” (CBC “St. Johns Christmas Parade…”).

Sources:
https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/st-john-s-the-latest-city-to-offer-sensory-friendly-space-at-christmas-parade-1.4699138

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/sensory-friendly-downtown-st-johns-christmas-parade-1.5365487

Street Art in Dakar

Padlet thirteen
In an area filled with lower and middle-class people, the walls are filled with street art that depicts Dakar, Senegal’s culture (Independent “In Dakar, street artists…”). These paintings show cultural art such as a Muslim holy man doing laundry, an African woman in a hurry or simply two women socializing (Independent “In Dakar, street artists…”). The Senegalese people call this street art project “the open sky museum” (The New York Times “Who Needs Canvas…”). People have even come from other countries just to add their own art to these Senegalese walls. Senegal has seen artists from countries such as Burkina Faso, Algeria, Morocco, Congo, France, and Italy (The New York Times “Who Needs Canvas…”). Mr. Mamadou Boye Diallo, who is also known as Modboye, is truly the man who started this project (Independent “In Dakar, street artists…”).In 2010, Modboye created a nonprofit art collaboration called Yataal Art. This began the first wall art. Modboye painted the first wall painting with some of his friends (Independent “In Dakar, street artists…”). It was difficult to begin the project as it was hard to convince homeowners to allow others to paint on their house’s walls, but once the project began, neighbors began to “compete” against each other to have the most decorated walls (Independent “In Dakar, street artists…”).

Sources:
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/long_reads/street-art-dakar-senegal-painting-mural-sky-museum-a9216901.html

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/23/world/africa/dakar-senegal-street-art.html
