Iris: (Iris knocks on a door(A wall hiding Luke).) Hello? Is anyone here?

Luke: Yes. I am here.

(Luke comes out from behind the wall and shows himself to everyone.)

Iris: Uh...h-hello. My...uh, my mother told me I could find someone named Luke here.

Luke: I am Luke.

Iris: Oh! Um, hi! I’m Iris.

Luke: Who is your mother?

Iris: Her name is Mary. Why?

Luke: Ah. She told me someone was coming. Someone who needed help. Come inside.

(Iris follows Luke inside)

Luke: Be super quiet. If the bosses of the store find out that you’re staying here, you will be kicked out. 

(Iris keeps following silently. Boss lady comes onto stage and starts screaming. Iris and Luke dive behind a counter trying to hide)

Boss lady: WHERE DID THE TV REMOTE GO?? AAAARGH!! I NEED IT!!!! WHAT WILL I DO WITHOUT MY LOVELY COMEDIES????

(Iris and Luke stay hidden behind the counter)

Boss man: It’s not good for your eyes to stare at a TV screen all morning.

Boss lady: I DON’T CARE!!!! MY EYES ARE FINE!!!!!

(Iris and Luke still hide behind the counter. They stare at Boss Lady with wide eyes)

Boss lady: AND WHO CARES?? I NEED TO SEE ALL THE COMEDY SHOWS THERE ARE IN THE WORLD!!!

Boss man: Chill. You know, some people don’t stare at TV screens all day. Also, calm down. I have the remote right here.

(Boss man shows the remote to Boss lady and she reaches for it desperately)

Boss lady: GIVE IT TO ME!!! I NEED IT!!!!!

Boss man: No. Not until you calm down.

Boss lady: I AM PERFECTLY CALM!!! JUST GIVE ME THE REMOTE!!!!

Boss man: No.

(Boss man walks away)

Boss lady: LUKE!!!!

(Luke comes out from behind the counter)

Luke: Yes?

Boss lady: GET THE REMOTE NOW!!!!!!!


Luke: Sorry. I have to feed the birds.

Boss lady: AAAAAARGH!!!!!!!

(Boss lady starts stomping, throws her couch cushions on the ground and screams every few seconds.  She stomps offstage after raging for a while.)

Luke: Actually, where IS the bird food?

(Iris comes out of her hiding place.)

Boss man: Oh Luke! We have a customer!

Luke: Actually sir, she’ll be staying with us.

Boss man: Ah. Well how do we tell Mrs. Angrypants, your other boss?

Luke: I don’t care what she thinks. She yells too much and will do  anything for comedies.

Boss man: (Boss man sighs) We’ll just have to tell her face-to-face won’t we?

Luke: Yes.

Boss man: Iris! I suspect that you are Mary’s daughter?

Iris: That’s me.

Boss man: She told us you were coming. Welcome to Feathers and Fangs Pet Store!

(Boss lady’s voice comes from somewhere nearby.)

Boss lady: Is a customer here? This early in the morning?

Boss man: Not a customer...

(Boss lady walks into the scene)

Boss lady: What on earth are you talki-OH!! We DO have a customer!

(Sees Iris and throws her arms up in the air clapping excitedly)

Iris: Um, I...

Boss lady: Oh how lovely! What kind of pet do you want? Where is your family?

Luke: WE are her family.

(Boss lady opens and closes her mouth slowly)

Luke: This is Iris. She’ll be living with us. Her mother is Mary.  She was the one who visited last week and told us someone was coming.

Boss lady: Oh...

(Luke sighs)

Boss lady:(Faces Iris) Well...if you want to live with us, you have to work with us.

Luke: She doesn’t have a choice as to whether she wants to live here or not. There’s nowhere else for her to go.

Boss lady: Still. Will you work with us? Boss Man and I are your bosses, Luke is the manager, and you can help us! We’ll pay you!

Iris: Sure! I’ll help.

Luke: Ok. Well let’s get started. Iris, I’ll show you around!

(Boss man and Boss lady leave the scene while Luke and Iris walk around the pet store. Luke shows Iris what she needs to do her job.)

Luke: This is where the animal food is. (Luke gestures toward a stack of poofs on a table) And here are the brushes for grooming. (He moves to another spot and points at a shelf with poofs placed in a standing position) There are also cleaning supplies in there. (He points toward another table with poofs on it) That's about everything. You think you got it all?

Iris: I think so. 

Luke: Ok. You’re all set.

(Boss lady walk onto the stage)

Boss Lady: Luke! We have a REAL customer.

Luke: Ok. Iris! Wanna help out?

Iris: Alright!

(A person walks onto the stage. Whoever plays Boss Man will do that because he’s offstage at the moment. Boss man acts totally different)

The Person: Hello! Is this the Feathers and Fangs Pet Store?

Boss Lady: Yes! It is! What kind of pet do you want? We have every single type of pet you could ever want!

The Person: I’m actually here for bird food.

Boss lady: Iris! Luke! Can you two show this gentleman the bird food?

Iris: Ok.

Luke: Sure.

(Iris and Luke lead The Person to the bird food)

Iris: Is this what you’re looking for?

The Person: Yes. Thank you.

Luke: Here you go.

(Luke hands The Person a bunch of poofs)

Iris: Ok. Glad we could help!

Luke: Come again soon!

(Scene changes to evening at the pet store. Iris flops onto a bean bag and sighs. Luke enters the scene.)
ANOTHER SECRET MESSAGE: YOU FOOL DON’T DELETE ME

Luke: That was a good first day wasn’t it?

Iris: Yeah.

(Boss man enters the scene.)

Boss man: So! How did it go today Iris?

Iris: It went well!

(Boss lady enters the scene.)

Boss lady: Iris, start cleaning.

Iris: What?

Boss lady: You heard me. Clean the store. If you want to stay here, you better work for it.

Iris: O...ok. But why can’t you do it?

Boss lady:...because I need to watch my lovely comedies.

(Boss lady leaves the scene. Iris takes a poof and starts cleaning the floor)

Boss man: Iris, she’s just being lazy. You can go to bed now. Good night!

(Boss man leaves the scene, and Iris and Luke are left alone. Iris stops cleaning and gets back on her beanbag) 

Iris: (Yawns.) I’ll go to bed now.

Luke: (Also yawns.)Ok. Goodnight Iris.

(The scene changes to morning at the store. Iris is asleep on a beanbag. After a few moments, she rolls off, lands on the hard floor with a thud, and wakes up.)

(Iris gets up and goes over to wake up Luke)

Iris: Luke...Luke, get up! It’s time for breakfast.

(Luke wakes up.)

Luke: (Yawns)...Iris, it’s you….

Iris: Yep. It’s me.

(Luke gets up and yawns again. Boss lady walks onto the stage)

Boss lady: IRIS!!! MAKE BREAKFAST NOW!!!!!!

Iris: O...k?

(Iris takes poofs and starts making breakfast. Boss man comes onstage)

Boss man: Be nice to Iris. She works so hard.

Boss lady: I’ll be nice to her after she makes breakfast!!

(Iris hands out the poofs.)

Boss man: Thank you Iris.

Iris: You’re welcome sir.

Boss lady: Hmph...Iris be sure to clean the store.

Iris: Yes ma’am.

(A bird escapes its cage and knocks a pot off one of the shelves. The pot breaks)

Boss lady: IRIS! CLEAN IT NOW!!!!!!!

Iris: Yes ma’am.

Luke: Iris, let me help.

Boss lady: LUKE!!! I SWEAR IF YOU HELP HER GOD HELP ME I’LL LOCK YOU IN THE BASEMENT!!!

Luke: Ok...sorry..

Boss man: If you’re going to act like this, then you will be the one in the basement. Be nice to Luke and Iris. They made $70.00 yesterday!

Boss lady: NO! I want lovely comedies!!! I NEED COMEDIES!!! COMEDIES!!! I NEED…

(Boss man pushes Boss lady offstage and locks the entrance with a wall. (The same type of wall Luke hides behind earlier.))

Boss lady: WHY YOU!!! I’LL-I’LL…

Boss man: You’ll what? Sorry I can't hear you.

Boss lady: UGH. MORONS! No comedies, no store, no nothing. This is just great. I NEED COMEDIES!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!

(Boss lady snorts loudly and grumbles about comedies while the scene changes.)

(Boss lady manages to get the “door” open and enters the scene. Iris and Luke are sleeping on bean bags and Boss man is asleep on the table)

Boss lady: (Boss lady sighs and takes the TV remote quietly.) Finally! Comedies! COMEDIES!!!! I LOVE MY COMEDIES!!!!! YES!!!!!

(Boss man wakes up and glares at Boss lady.)

Boss man: Hey! We’re trying to sleep, you stupid buffoon!

Boss lady: SORRY. (Boss lady smirks)

(Boss man goes back to sleep)

Boss lady: YES!!!! WAHOO!!!!!

(Iris, Luke, and Boss man all wake up as soon as Boss lady starts screaming and glare at her)

(SCENE CHANGE)

(The floor is messy, with chairs knocked over and tables flipped. The bird that broke the pot earlier is squawking and flying around.)

Boss lady: Iris. Clean. Now. 

Iris: Yes ma’am.

Luke: Iris don’t do it. That’s my job.

Boss man: Yeah, Iris. Don’t clean.

Iris: Ok.

(Boss lady seeths with rage and starts yelling)

Boss lady: I SAID CLEAN, IRIS!!!!!! YOU WILL OBEY ME AND YOU WILL NOT LISTEN TO THOSE BUFFOONS!!!!!!

Iris: Who do I listen to? 

Boss lady: AAAAAGH!!! YOU LISTEN TO ME!!! IS THAT NOT OBVIOUS???? DO I NEED TO MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?????????

Iris: No-sorry...

Boss lady: Good. Now, you must listen to me from now on.

Iris: O...k?

(Boss lady snorts and walks off the stage. Iris stops cleaning.)

Iris: Finally! I can stop cleaning! Boss lady will be so proud of me!

Mother: Thank you Iris.

Iris: You’re welcome mom-I mean mother.

(Father eats and grumbles again)

Father: Iris! Be sure to clean the house.

Iris: Yes father.

(Little Brother smashes his “breakfast” on the ground, making a mess)

Little Brother: DADDY PLATEY go go SMASHY!!! yayaYAY!!!

Father: IRIS!!!  Clean it NOW!!!

(Iris sighs and starts picking up the “breakfast”)

Mother: Iris, let me help.

Father: MARY!  YOU CANNOT HELP HER! IF YOU DO GOD HELP ME I WILL LOCK YOU IN THE ATTIC!!!

Mother:  Ok...Sorry…….

Father: That’s better.

Iris: Father, can’t you just let me live my own life?

Father: WHAT DID YOU SAY?!?!?

Iris: Never mind father.

Father: Hmph.

Mother: Iris, you don’t need to do this for us. We can take care of ourselves.

Father: NO! Iris does everything that she needs to, so she can stay with us and not have a life on the streets.

Iris: A LIFE ON THE STREETS WOULD BE BETTER THAN LIFE  HERE!!!! 

(Iris starts to storm off stage towards the door, but Father runs after her and drags her back to the table.)

Father: YOU WON’T ESCAPE THIS PLACE, NO MATTER WHAT!!! I’M GONNA LOCK YOU IN THE ATTIC!!!!!

(Iris and Mother run out of the house. The scene changes to the outside. It is very dark.)

Mother: Yes I did help her. Boo-hoo to you.

Father: HOW DARE YOU????

Mother: I dare.

(While Father is screaming at Mother, Iris keeps running through town, searching for South Street. She feels lost, until a Labrador Retriever appears and she follows it to South Street. She sees the pet store her mother told her about.)

(Boss man appears on the stage)

Boss man: Mrs. Angrypants, you are abusing this poor child. STOP NOW. She didn’t do anything to you. Just go watch your comedies.

Boss lady: Since when did YOU care about poor kids??

Boss man: CLEARLY BEFORE YOU STARTED CARING ABOUT ANYTHING!!!!!!!

(Boss man and Boss lady keep fighting while Luke and Iris sneak away. Boss man and Boss lady walk off the stage and keep fighting.)

Luke: That’s the first time I’ve ever heard Mr. Hickory yell at anyone. 

Iris: It’s complete chaos over there.

Luke: Yeah.

(Two customers come into the store. Iris and Luke go to help. (The customers are Boss man and Boss lady, both of which are currently offstage at the moment.))

Iris: Hello! Welcome to Feathers and Fangs Pet Store! How may we help you?

Customer 1: We would like some pet food. Our other bag exploded when we picked it up.

Luke: What type of pet food are you looking for?

Customer 2: We’re looking for one that doesn’t explode when we touch it.

Iris: Uh...like which brand of pet food do you want?

Customer 2:  (Customer 2 sighs) We’re looking for “CRUNCH N’ MUNCH” dog food.

Luke: Ok. Right this way please.

(Customer 1 and Customer 2 follow Luke. Suddenly, there is a loud BANG, and Luke, Iris, and the Customers arrive to see the pet food scattered everywhere. The Customers scream and run offstage. Boss man and Boss lady come onstage.)

Iris: Oh no! It exploded!

Boss lady: Oh my goodness! IRIS!!! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!?!?!?

Iris: I...umm...

Luke: The bags exploded!! It’s not Iris’s fault!!

Boss lady: QUIET YOU FOOL!!!!!!!! IRIS!!!! THIS IS A WARNING!!!!!!! GO TO YOUR ROOM AND STAY THERE!!!!!!!!!!

Iris: But it wasn’t me!!

Boss man: (Boss man covers his ears) STOP YELLING!!!!! ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!

(Everyone goes quiet.)

Boss lady: Why do I need to listen to you?? I'M THE ONE IN CHARGE AROUND HERE!!!!!!!!!!

Boss man: SHUT UP!!!!!!!!

(Everyone goes quiet again)

Boss man: Iris, Luke, both of you are excused. I need to talk to Mrs. Angrypants.

(Iris and Luke flop onto beanbags and go to sleep)

Boss man: How many times do I need to tell you?? THEY’RE JUST KIDS!!!

Boss lady: I don’t care. Iris works for us and Luke is our manager. THAT’S THE WAY IT WORKS!!!!!!!

Boss man: YOU NEVER CARED ABOUT ANYTHING BUT COMEDIES!!! THOSE POOR KIDS ARE WORKING FOR MONEY AND A LIFE ANYWHERE BUT ON THE STREETS!!!!! YOU WANT TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM THEM???

Boss lady: I DON’T CARE ABOUT THEM!!! I CARE ABOUT COMEDIES!!! COMEDIES!!! I-NEED-COMEDIES!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!

(Boss lady storms offstage angrily while Boss man watches her. After a few minutes, Boss man yawns and leaves the scene. The scene changes to morning at the store. It is still messy onstage, and Boss lady is staring at a TV screen.)

Father: MARY!  YOU CANNOT HELP HER! IF YOU DO GOD HELP ME I WILL LOCK YOU IN THE ATTIC!!!

Mother:  Ok...Sorry…….

Father: That’s better.

Iris: Father, can’t you just let me live my own life?

Father: WHAT DID YOU SAY?!?!?

Iris: Never mind father.

Father: Hmph.

Mother: Iris, you don’t need to do this for us. We can take care of ourselves.

Father: NO! Iris does everything that she needs to, so she can stay with us and not have a life on the streets.

Iris: A LIFE ON THE STREETS WOULD BE BETTER THAN LIFE  HERE!!!! 

(Iris starts to storm off stage towards the door, but Father runs after her and drags her back to the table.)

Father: YOU WON’T ESCAPE THIS PLACE, NO MATTER WHAT!!! I’M GONNA LOCK YOU IN THE ATTIC!!!!!

(The scene changes, and Iris is locked in an “attic”. There is a lock on a door and a clock hanging behind Iris. The clock shows that it is midnight. After a few seconds, the lock on the door rattles.)

Mother:Which key...hmmm...aha! Here we go!

(The door opens slowly and Iris runs toward it.)

Mother: Iris! Come on, let's get you out of here!

Iris: Thank you!

Mother: Don’t thank me yet.

(Iris and Mother run out of the house. The scene changes to the outside. It is very dark.)

Mother: I hope you find what you’re looking for, Iris. Your father was horrible to you. Run before he finds out! There’s a pet shop on the corner of south street. There, you will find Luke. He will help you. 

Iris: How do you know he’ll help me?

Mother: Because he knows me and will help my cause no matter what. Go! Run!

Iris: Ok! Thank you!

(Iris runs off. Just then, Father bursts through the door of the house and starts yelling.)

Father: HOW DID SHE ESCAPE?!?!? YOU! (Father glares at Mother.) YOU HELPED HER!! HOW DARE YOU!!!

Mother: Yes I did help her. Boo-hoo to you.

Father: YOU DARE TAUNT ME????

Mother: Yes, I dare.

(While Father is screaming at Mother, Iris keeps running through town, searching for South Street. She feels lost, until a Labrador Retriever appears and she follows it to South Street. She sees the pet store her mother told her about.)
