What kind of music is missing?

The kind of music missing from these American Symphony Orchestras are the ones composed or written by women. There is a major lack of representation by this group mostly due to the fact that people do not see the works that have been made by them as "canons" or classic works. In an article called, "Literary canons exclude works no matter how selective canon makers are." By Jordan Bates, talks about how the start of canonization began and how, “The Western literary canon has historically been dictated by economically secure, traditionally educated, socially privileged white men,”. This is the blatant evidence that only one group got to decide what was worth canonizing. This group excluded women and minorities due to factors that only they thought were important.

While women have made a significant impact on the music industry for years, today they are still seen as a trend instead of impactful figures in the music scene. In the article,

"A New Canon: In Pop Music, Women Belong At The Center Of The Story" by Ann Powers talks about how women are still seen within the margins and wonders why "the importance of women [are] so often recognized as a trend instead of a source of lasting impact?" Yes, women have impacted the music industry and has changed how we see it in many ways, but as a society we still don't fully appreciate this.

Yes, I believe hearing music from women, made by women, is something I can see myself in. I believe that music made by women represents me and it is something I can relate and connect too. I believe women have made works as good and, in some cases, better than some canons made by men.
