Nicolas Anelka: Quenelle Gesture

This picture shows former Premier League champion Nicolas Anelka displaying a gesture known commonly as the 'Quenelle Gesture'. French activist Diedonne Mbala Mbala made this gesture famous in 2005.
Some interpreted Anelka's gesture in 2013 as a nazi salute and a support gesture of antisemitism, he denied this. The Quenelle gesture's meaning is widely disputed. It is described by Mbala Mbala as an 'up yours' gesture to the establishment which could explain why Anelka used it to stand against possible racism he has encountered in his life. He was subsequently banned from playing for West From and was exiled to India where ehe played for Mumbai City, his last club before retirement. French officials label the gesture as "an inverted Nazi salute representing the sodomy of the victims of the Holocaust". This gesture probably has different meanings to different people....

This photo is of Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy the first two Black coaches to reach the 200 Superbowl final.
The Rooney Rule is a National Football League policy that requires league teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs.
The issue that this example brings is that it highlights the racial inequalities within the NFL in terms of equal opportunities.
The rule also reinforces the stereotype as it almost suggests black managers/coaches couldn't get the job on their own merit and need the rule to secure the interview.
In other ways it could be argued that it challenges the stereotype as it is trying to get more black coaches in the NFL.

This picture is of the 2016 USA Basketball Team that went to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The players in the squad are all black, which you can argue that because the aggressiveness of the game basketball, these players have been chosen because of the stereotype that black people are fast, strong and powerful, which you can argue that stacking is happening here.
Also, because the coaching staff are predominately white, that even though they have chosen a full black team, you could argue that there's still an ideology of "white ruling".
However, in the game basketball, the point guard needs to have a tactical prowess to control the game on court. This is Kyrie Irving's position; thus, you can argue that these stereotypes of black athletes just being strong and fast is being challenged.

Galen Rupp is an example of a challenge to race ideologies.

The American long-distance runner is a part of the Nike Oregon Project, that promotes long-distance running. He regularly trains and competes with Britain's Sir Mo Farah.

Rupp won a silver medal in the 10,000 meters at the London 2012 Olympic games. He then won a bronze medal in the men's marathon at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Both of these events have been dominated by black athletes over the last 30 years, helping to reinforce a racial ideology that black athletes are more powerful, with more stamina than others (Since 1960, Ethiopia have won 53 medals, all of which have come from long distance-running events).

Rupp's achievements in the sport therefore provide a challenge to this.

This is a picture is of Dirk Nowitzki, arguably one of the best power forwards in basketball history.

It's interesting to note that Nowitzki is white in what many people would claim to be a predominantly black sport. This is showing that racial stereotypes aren't always true.

However, going into more detail in the picture you see that the majority of the crowd is white. So while Basketball is seen as a place where black athletes thrive, they are still entertaining a large white audience.

We see this as breaking down racial barriers. Because no matter what colour your skin is as long as it's entertaining you would happily invest in the sport.

Finally, we looked at the crowd in more detail again and we realised that the lower down in the stand you look the more white faces you see compared to black faces.

The South African cricket team show both sides of the argument, using sport as both a site for challenging and reinforcing racial ideology.

The image is of the South African cricket team from 2005, showing the lack of racial equality in the squad.

Whereas, an article from January 2017 states that "The future of South African cricket is black and bright". This is down to the introduction of "racial quotas" which aim to have a season average of at least 6 Black players, 2 of which must be Black African. This was put in place in 2015 and has succeeded in introducing more black players into the team. However, it has caused division with many of the white players who feel they are now being discriminated against.
A quote from an African newspaper says that "when black players are selected, it is automatically assumed to be because they are black and when white players are not selected, it is assumed it is because they are white."
