John Brown's Raid (October 16, 1859)

A revolt led by John Brown. The plan was to raid a US arsenal, and with the slaves, revolt towards the Southern States. The epitome of the split between the North and South.

Kansas-Nebraska Act (May 30, 1854)

It essentially rejected the Missouri Compromise of the border of free and slave states in the region won from Mexico and from the Louisiana purchase. It allowed popular sovereignty, the people in the new-coming states to vote for slavery or not.

Republican Party Formed (March 20, 1854)

Mexican War (April 25, 1846)

The Mexican War was fought between the U.S and Mexico. This began with a dispute over the annexation of Texas by the U.S in 1845. After Texas had been admitted to the Union as the 28th state.

South Carolina Secedes (December 20, 1860)

When Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president, the South Carolina legislature perceived a threat. Calling a state convention, the delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the union known as the United States of America.

Compromise of 1850

Missouri Compromise (March 6, 1820)

This legislation admitted Missouri as a slave state, however with the compromise of Maine being a non-slave state. As to not upset the balance between slave and free states in the nation. This also outlawed slavery in the 36'30' latitude line in the remainder of the Louisiana Territory.

Dred Scott decision (1846-1857)

It was the upholding of slavery in the United States territories, it denied the legalization of Black citizenship in the United States. This was caused to him claiming he was free since he was in free territory where slavery wasn't allowed.

Nat Turner Revolt (August 21, 1831)

Nathaniel "Nat" Turner was an enslaved man who led a rebellion of enslaved people on August 21, 1831. His actions set off a massacre of up to 200 black people, ensuing a new wave of legislation prohibiting the education, movement, and assembly of enslaved people.
