Carol Ann Duffy was born on December 23 1955 in Glasgow Scotland. She lived in Glasgow until she was six years old before she and her family moved to Stanford England. Her father was a fitter for an electric company. Duffy grew up publishing her poetry in magazines at age 14 before attending Liverpool University and graduating with a degree in philosophy in 1977. Duffy, in her adulthood, worked as a poetry critic for The Guardian from 1988 to 1989 after traveling to read and teach her poetry. She also worked as an editor for Ambit, the poetry magazine.
