Optimism plays a big role in Ajarry's life as she looks atthe bright side to her captivity.

In this chapter, we get a deeper look into Ethels past. She had always wanted to be a missionary, which shows white saviorism. She felt as if she never got what she desired as her bestfriend Jasmine was taken and sold. With taking care of Cora, she felt that she finally got what she wanted even though it resulted in her death. The girl lay on the sheets, curved like a primeval river. She cleaned the girl, washing her filth from her. "She kissed the girl on her forehead and neck in her restless slumber with two kinds of feeling mixed up in those kisses. She gave her the Holy Word.” (page 164)

during this chapter we get a much better picture into Ethels past and what her dreams and ambitions were. how she always wanted to be a missionary (which reveals her white saviorism) we also learn that Ethel is most likely gay in this chapter because she had/developed feelings for her friend jasmine and for Cora but she finally fulfills that feeling with helping Cora. however she dies in the end of this chapter "She kissed the girl on her forehead and neck in her restless slumber with two kinds of feeling mixed up in those kisses.” (page 164)

We are now taking a better look into Ridgeway's life since we have already been introduced to him in the previous chapter. He is a slave catcher that is determined to catch Cora due to his obssession of catching Mabel, her mother who was the first slave to successfully escape. HIs father is disproving of his job, but this does not influence his decision of a job. "Slaves eluded him from time to time. He was extraordinary, not supernatural. He failed, and Mabel’s disappearance nagged at him longer than it should have, buzzing in the stronghold of his mind. (71).”

In Ethel, we learn about her past and get a deeper input into what her life was really like. Ever since she was little, Ethel had always dreamed of becoming a missionary in Africa to "deliver the savages to light" (pg 196). But she was denied this dream and instead became a teacher and got married but she still longed for her journey to Africa. When Cora becomes ill, Ethel sees this as the opportunity she's always wanted. "She cleaned the girl, washing her filth from her. She kissed the girl on her forehead and neck." (pg 200)

In this episode we learn that Ethel has a white savior complex and that she grew up with slaves all around her. She wanted to "help" the slaves but in reality she wanted the praise for helping them. Her father "went upstairs" with her friend jasmine as well as her mom. So her entire life is centered around slaves.

Stevens is a medical student who had paid his income by snatching bodies. He feels a sense of affinity with black people and is complicit for his wrong doings. This gives us a deeper reason into his examination with Cora. He’d be a medical student again in the morning. Tonight he was a resurrection man. Body snatcher was an accurate name. Resurrection man was a bit florid, but it held a truth. (116).”

Throughout the story, Coras motivation for her escape was Mabel. Although her mother left her at the age of eleven, Cora never knew the true story. Mabel had successfully escaped, but then decided to go back to be with Cora. She sadly had passed away, but the main lesson was to know that she had decided where she was going to die. "She had to go back. The girl was waiting on her. This would have
to do for now. Her hopelessness had gotten the best of her, speaking
under her thoughts like a demon." (page 242)

Here we are taken back to the Randall plantation with Caesars story. Books had been his escape to reality and Cora gave him hope that he could go home, which would result into their escape. "She shielded the boy with her own body and took his blows for him. She was a stray through and through, so far off the path it was like she’d already run from the place long ago."
