Formative assessment by

2.	Please add your ways of doing formative assessment (and where relevant how it is marked and feedback given) to this Padlet. We are hoping to get some clear ideas of how formative assessment can be incorporated for benefit to the students, without adding to workload.

The assessment was a 1000 word diagnostic report to include labelled pictures from the virtual microscope. Getting the students to critically evaluate work from previous years (anonymised) helped them understand the requirements and to see what they might like to do, and also what to avoid. Lots took on ideas to incorporate flowcharts and diagrams (which helped them prepare towards posters later in the year). It also helped them with common questions such as referencing and figure legends and saved a lot of angst for them

A nightmare logistically to arrange for more than 400 students, but the answers were provided on the screen at the end so they marked themselves immediately and it was all done in a day. The summative exam went really smoothly and the students were confident of how it would work and the type of questions coming.

Worked really well for over 120 students. Formative assessment had 6x2-page answers. Reduced this to 4x2 page answers and had one peer marked by students.
Peer marking was done in the lecture theatre. Students marked their own and 3 other random scripts. They were give the model answer and mark scheme by the question setter at the start. They could easily see examples of better and worse answers than their own. Applying the marking scheme themselves made it easier for them to see where they were going wrong and was much more useful than a comment from a marker that said 'more detail required' or similar.
Outcome -reduction in staff formative marking load by half. Students gained a lot more from the peer marking than staff feedback.

Labs followed by formative Rogo assessment

Previously lab work was submitted every other week online within a week of the lab session and formative feedback provided via online comments in Turnitin in preparation for summative lab assessments. The submission of online work (reports) was replaced by a formative Rogo assessment that once written reduced staff workload. Clear answers are provided for students to assess their understanding, and now the Rogo assessments will form part of the lab plenary where common misunderstandings etc can be addressed before students leave the session. In addition, students can revisit these as much as they like.

As part of the move to online learning, students are asked to answer an application question based on the LOs of a topic and post their reponses anaonymously on Padlet. Any submissions made are marked and feedback provided to the whole class in a subsequent session to identify good practice, misunderstandings, confusion etc. The submissions could be also be used in class in group work, discussions, getting students to mark and then compare to the actual mark etc.

Have used a progressive approach to get students to engage with mark schemes, what is required in certain elements such as table and figure legends. Get them to do online short-answer (often multiple choice) quiz often pre-session and with completion linked to access to key materials and/or summative submission. Then build to self assessment with a mark scheme, then peer assessment, ahead of the actual summative assessment.
