The true sense of lace emerged in the 15th century; the following century marked an increasing popularity of this intricate fabric in Western Europe. Influenced by the Rococo style, both the technical aspects and the style types entered their peak period and gradually spread around the world. By the 16th century, as the popularity of decorative techniques in clothing were rising, lace had become an accessory for the noble class due to its complex and intricate craftsmanship. Its delicate, elegant texture and layered design became an indispensable element in the royal clothing, primarily in the upper classes of European countries. Under the push of Baroque art and Rococo style in the 17th and 18th centuries, lace retained its cultural implications of status, means, and class.
