Nathaniel Turdeich by

Nathaniel joined Harrow Beijing in August 2023 as a Year 5 student from New Zealand. He has acclimated well to the new environment, establishing friendships easily, particularly with the children of staff members. Nathaniel demonstrates a strong aptitude in reading, engaging effectively in discussions about the texts he has read. He has made significant progress in writing and spelling, and is diligently working to familiarize himself with the use of assistive technology, such as his tablet. However, Nathaniel can sometimes become easily distracted and requires reminders to maintain focus and stay on task. He responds positively to praise and immediate feedback, which supports his continued growth and engagement in learning.

Nathaniel is a delightful and very polite student who has shown a positive attitude towards learning Mandarin. He always greets me in Mandarin when he sees me at school. His IT skills are excellent, and he loves helping me solve any computer problems in the classroom. Nathaniel enjoys working with his classmates and is eager to expand his vocabulary. His pride and smile are evident once he achieves this.

Nathaniel responds well to praise and house points. He loves challenges, especially those he sets for himself. For example, when he sees his classmates learning words at different levels, he shows curiosity and courage in learning them. Nathaniel needs a lot of adult support and reminders during independent work and benefits from taking breaks during longer periods of work.

Nathaniel has a general positive attitude, he has grown hugely in confidence this year, and has worked hard to acclimatise to his new school setting. He is eager to help teachers and others and offer a helping hand. When Nathaniel understands a task or concept he can really flourish and is proud of his work.

Pastorally, Nathaniel's biggest achievement has been settling into a very new school environment, and forming strong connections with peers across his year group. Academically, Nathaniel has shown a definite improvement in his independence, he has a better understanding of what is expected, and he is able to organise himself that much better.

Nathaniel has thrived when given extra moments of responsibility, when challenged he can rise to the occasion. He responds well to House Points and constant visual reminders of expectations - we used a visual aid that was stuck to his desk. He began the year receiving 1-1 support frequently, now he is much more independent.

However when learning new subjects or concepts this is something he may benefit from again. Nathaniel often struggles to focus, during input and during independent or group work. Working in a group for Nathaniel often leads to disagreements however, he is more successful when working in pairs.

Nathaniel will become distracted and play with objects during most lessons at some point. We tried a strategy where he was given Blu-tack to play with whilst he listened to the lesson, but at this point Nathaniel was not able to use it in an appropriate way. This may be something he could return to when he is older.

In music class, Nathaniel did not always show interest in the lessons or approach new challenges with the positive attitude. He would start each class complaining that he hated whatever we were learning. At first I tried to talk with him about it, but then over time I learned if I ignored his complaints and just told him to get to work/practicing, he would be successful.
