It was my first time in Chiang Rai. Chiang Rai is totally different from Singapore and I was very excited. My first expression of Chiang Rai is it’s very picturesque. When we first arrived, after spending some time in the airport, we went for our first dinner at a bar & restaurant. The food there was delicious and even though i have tired some of the dishes that was served yesterday back in Singapore before, they rectify the dishes such as instead of using mayonnaise for fish and chips, they served it with a Strawberry sauce! It was quite foreign for me to try such dishes but i was not disappointed. Also, the waiters and waitresses are very kind and friendly. When they served us foods, they politely thanked us with a wide smile. After dinner, we went to a supermarket called Big C to get tidbits. I was shocked to see that the foods there are cheaper than in Singapore. I was also amazed by how the cashier greeted me when i was about to pay for the foods. Overall, i enjoyed my first day in Chiang Rai because i find many different things that are foreign in Singapore such as not wearing helmet while riding motorcycles!

My first day in Chaing Rai was okay as we did not do much since we miss our fight and it cause delays in our activities. The first flight to Bangkok was fun since i got to sit with my friends. But the food wasnt good as its spicy. However the food for the second flight to Chiang Rai was really nice. The airport here is huge as we need to get on the shuttle bus in order to go to our plane however it is not as advance as Changi airport. And our dinner was good too! It so cool that they gave us strawberry sauce to eat with the fries. Its weird but the taste wasnt bad though. Then we went to the supermarket to buy our stuff for the night. However i was having a hard time with the money as im still not familiar with the currency. Overall today was good and relax

Today, my friends and I went to SOS Children Village Kindergarten. We went there to play the planned activities that we have come out with when we were back home. When we first arrived, I saw the children sitting on the floor in a straight line with cross legged. To be honest, I was very shocked to see how discipline they were! Firstly, they were gathered at the big foyer. I went on to introduce my friends and I and our motive of being there. We split them up into 3 groups based on their ages and split them to our different tribes accordingly. For my tribe, were assigned to children of ages of 2. After that, we split them into 2 groups- the first group did colouring competition and the other did art and crafts. I did the art and crafts with them and I was impressed by how talented and artistic they were. At first, I do find it difficult to interact with them because of the language barrier but nonetheless, they were being very cooperating and at the end of the activity, they finished their final product and the most important is they were having fun! We made shakers out of paper plates and beans. After making them, we decided to sing with them some kindergarten rhymes using the shaker instruments.

Finally the day to do activities. Visited the SOS children home and all the children were so cute. Got to see and understand the perspectives of these children. Playing with them makes me realise that it’s really not easy to be a kindergarden teacher. They’re very very hyper and 2 hours with them is really no joke. Overall, it was such a fun & exciting experience to build bonds with the children and teachers as well. Secondaly, we went to the Long Neck Tribe. It was a very rural area and it was interesting to learn the history about the long neck and why they wear it. The view was amazing as it’s near the mountains and we tried to buy some souvenirs to help them in their sales. All the things there were very pretty. Lastly, dinner. Finally a halal restaurant and the food was very good. Definitely the best dinner i ever had as of now. Had the best day, hoping that other days will be as good as this.

Day 2 was more productive as we went to visit to the SOS Children Village and we are able to mix around and play with them. Im glad that the language barrier does not stop us from being able to communicate with them and being close with them. I learnt alot at the SOS Children Village. It was satisfying to see them smiling from ear to ear as they are enjoyed the activites we prepared for them. However it is also disheartening and sad to see that at a very young age they have became an orphan however they are lucky to be living in the SOS Children Village as they are able to live like normal people even without their biological parents. Next we went to the Long Neck Village and i am glad that i was brought to this place as I only learn about the long neck village people and their tradition through my geography book. I learn that the girls there use the brass metal around their neck to make their neck look longer and they believe that the longer their neck is the more beautiful they are. The lunch at the hotel was good but the dinner at the halal restaurant was even more delicious. I really enjoyed myself today as it was filled with very meaningful activities

Day 2 was quite tiring. Firstly we went to SOS Village to play the activities we have planned with the children there. At first, i had a hard time trying to explain to them on the activity we doing. I tried to use sign language to make them colour the paper plate. They just simply follow what i did and were so quiet. When they got to make the end product, which is the shaker then they were so hype up. They really enjoy playing with the shaker and keep jumping around. It was really fun playing with them and tiring too because they we really energetic than me. I find that the SOS initiative to cater the orphans in the small village is really innovative. And it is really good to have a suppotive culture so they feel sense of belonging. After that we went to the Long Neck Tribe. I have been wanting to see them in real life as i find it cool. And the place was nice too with the mountain surrounding the place. The dinner was the best meal so far. Overall today is still an enjoyable day.

Today, we went to a primary school here in Chiang Rai. Firstly, when we arrived, we saw the school. I saw the students starting to come out and they looked like us as we are foreigners. Secondly, they were diverse into three groups according to their primary school levels. My tribe and I was assigned the upper primary 5 and 6. Thirdly, we introduced ourselves to the upper primary and the games that we were gonna play- soccer and volleyball. At first, they were quite shy with us and it felt awkward. When we started playing the game of soccer, I was so shocked! They were actually good players, even though they were only 11 and 12 year olds. The game ended with the score of 3-0, victory for them. After the game of soccer, we took a break. During the break, we got to interact with them. Some of them do understand Mandarin and with the help of one of my Chinese team members, we were able to communicate with them smoothly. When we were on our way to leave, we presented them with some gifts and some snacks that we have prepared for them. We also took some pictures with them individually to keep it for memories. After our day in the primary school, we went to tour around the village. The atmosphere was different. I also saw dogs and chickens walking around, freely. We also got thai milk tea finally in thailand and it was so cheap!! However, the highlight of the day was the shopping at the Night Market. My friends and I were so excited because it was shopping time. There were various souvenirs and i bought some to bring back home to Singapore and give it to my family and friends. I am looking forward for the second shopping at the night market today!

Day 3 we went and visit the Mae Salong Nay Primary School. Each of us were given a group of students who are elgible to play the games we have prepared. When we reach there, we were greeted by the principle of the school. We played football with them. Surprisingly, the boys there were very talented! I was amazed by how they are able to trick us multiple times. The girls also were very active as they played defense position. We then played volleyball with the girls and here again i was shock at how well they can play volleyball. When the hit the ball upwards, it really flew high and at a constantly right angle. It was kind of embarassing as we were very weak compared to them. I mean we are older than them but they are able to hit the hard volleyball without complaining that their hands are pain. Next we tour around the village and we saw some fruits grown on trees. We also saw mother chicken and the chicks. They were so cute. Next we went for dinner.. Dinner was okay. After dinner we went to the night market. The things sold there was cheap however i regret not being able to bargain as we were rushing to return to the meeting point.

Today we went to the primary school, tour around the village and night market. It was really nice to play with the primary school kids and seeing their smiles on their faces. We organized a soccer match which was us vs them and we got thrashed 3-0. They’re surprisingly very good at it. While the guys play soccer, the girls played volleyball and to no surprise they’re also very good at it. They are only 12-14 years old and they have so much talent. Eventhough there was a language barrier, we still managed to communicate and it was such a meaningful experience. They looked so happy to be playing all the activities that we planned out for them. I hope we can go back someday to plan better activities and spend more time with them. Secondly, we went around the village to understand better on how the people in Chiang Rai live their daily lives. After that we went dinner at a hotel and the food was good. Lastly, the night market definitely the highlight of this whole trip. I couldn’t remember when was the last time i shopped so much. I think I literally shopped till I drop. Everything here is so cheap and nice. 1.5 hours is definitely not enough. Luckily, we are coming back tomorrow. Overall, Chiang Rai has been so good to me and it’s sad that it’s coming to an end so soon.

First we set of from the hotel and went to the white temple. It was very beautiful and it is amazing how they are able to maintain the cleanliness of the place and polishing the structure to make it always shiny. However it is sad that we are unable to take a photo inside the temple. It was also very calming to see the purity of the temple. Another fun fact was tgat the toilet is painted with golden colour. After that, we head to the golden triangle. When we were there, we are explained about the reason why golden triangle got its name. Laos was 45 degrees diagonal on the right hand side from thailand while Myanmar was also 45 degrees diagonal on the left hand side from thailand. The river that connects all these 3 countries is called Mekong River. Afterward we tried the rainbow paddlepop ice cream which happens to be in a form of mini balls. It was extremely refreshing! Then we moved on to the hall of opium was interesting as we are able to understand and get to know more about Thailand illegal opium trades. When we were there, we watched a 7 min video on how this opium came about. Its surprising how opium are well hidden and sold illegally without getting caught during that time. Due to the misuse of opium in large quantities, they banned opium from being sold Next we had our dinner and we set of for our second round in the Chiang Rai Night market and we ended our day going to the Big C and headed back to the hotel to rest nd pack our bags to return back home the next day 😊

To our suprise the guys are really skilled in soccer and the girls are strong in volleyball. And they are so friendly and even taught me the proper way to hit the ball. Then we walk around the village and went to the market. I got to witness some tribe people with their costume. And its so cool. We had dinner at this nice hotel. We head to the night market. It was really fun as we got quite a long time to shop. I was abit scare to bargain at first. But as we go from one shop to another my friends taught me to how to bargain with them. I could get so much cheaper price and bought even more stuff.

The architecture of the temple is so beautiful and it is very detailed. Secondly, we went to the Myanmar border. Thailand and Myanmar was just across one another over a small river. Thirdly, we went to the Hall of Opium. Where we learn about the history of opium and the effects of the usage of opium. Fourthly, we went to the Golden triangle. I was so amaze by the view of the 3 countries Thailand, Myammar and Laos. They are seperated by Mekong River. Then we head to night market again. I bought more stuff and get cheaper price. Overall today is an interesting day as i get to learn more about Thailand.

Finally the day I’ve been looking forward to. The White Temple was so beautiful and the weather was so nice it was just perfect. The most interesting part was toilet was all gold in colour. Took so many pictures and created meaningful memories with my friends. Wishing that I can come back again some day. Secondly, we went to the Myanmar border. I was mesmerised that Myanmar was just at the other side and there was only a river separating it. After that, we went to walk around the area to shop and sight see. We found a small tea shop and bought thai milk tea but I accidentally dropped it infront of the shop because the plastic wasn’t strong enough. But the owner was nice enough to give us another one for free. Thirdly, the hall of opium. I wasn’t really interested at first but after learning more about it, the history and such it’s amazing to see how opium actually affected the world and people so much. Lastly, the golden triangle. We finally get to see the famous golden triangle that we’ve been researching about. The view at the triangle was wowwww. We could see myanmar & laos from where we were and there were little boats to go to laos but sadly we didnt get to ride it. I hope next time we could. And then the day comes to an end with dinner. Such a fun & memorable day so sad that the trip is ending soon.

Today, my friends and I went to the White Temple. As it was my first time, i was fascinated by the architecture of the temple. It was really breathe-taking. While we were walking around, we took numerous pictures as memories. When we entered the temple, it was necessary so for us to take off our shoes so it will not be dirty. After visiting the white temple, we went to visit the most northern part of Thailand and Myanmar boarder. I was so fascinated by it because it felt like being in two places at time. We went to walk and shop around that area to get some souvenir. After that, we went have our last lunch in Chiang Rai. We then went to Hall of Opium to learn about the history of golden triangle. I learnt a lot of fascinating facts about its history and it was very interesting. The highlight of yesterday’s trip was when we visited the Golden Triangle. It literally took my breath away as I could not believe I could see it with my own eyes. Myanmar was on the right and Laos was on the left. After the sight seeing, we went for our last dinner at our favourite halal restaurant. After dinner, we did our last shopping at the night market to get last minute souvenir and I got myself something there too. We then did our last shopping at the Big C and honestly, i would miss Big C the most because it had been good to me throughout this trip.

I was shocked when I realized that the children do understand abit of Chinese and they also know how to speak Chinese. We start playing soccer with a group of people from age 11 or 12 and I was shocked again as they are so good in that. They were so active as they were so hyper and active. The guys was running from one end to another end while the girls are so happy and they cheer so loud in the middle of the field. I was happy to see them enjoy the first game. Secondly, the girls play volleyball while the guys continue to play soccer, I can see that the girls are good in volleyball as when they hit the ball the ball went up so high and they hit it without miss. At the end of the day, the school receives alot of present or donations from us and the children was so happy to receive stuff from us and they were smiling without fail.
