We will offer two online Chinese courses in Spring 2024. Chinese 1 is a regular term course that meets synchronously on Mondays from 6 to 8:30 pm and asynchronously on other days. Chinese 2 is an 8-week course that is fully asynchronous and runs from March 23 to May 24. You can find more information and syllabi for both courses below:

Here are the steps to apply to Mission College.

• Create an account and apply to Mission College through CCC Apply.

• Wait for an email from Mission College with instructions on how to access the Mission Portal using your WVM username/email. This email should arrive within 24 hours after applying to the College.

• Once you have completed step 3, the admission office will clear the prerequisite for Chinese 1 if you are eligible to take Chinese 2.

• Register for classes through the Mission Portal.

• Email yen-ping.mao@wvm.edu with your name, school ID, and background in learning Chinese if you have any questions.

1. “Blood is thicker than water” in English is similar to “血浓于水 (xuè nóng yú shuǐ)” in Chinese¹.

2. “Strike while the iron is hot” in English is similar to “趁热打铁 (chènrè dǎtiě)” in Chinese¹.

These idioms show that even for languages as different as English and Chinese, there are common ideas we all feel the need to express².

Each School/Community host a 75-minute workshop at the event (tentative time: 10:30am – 11:45am) with the first 30 minutes being an overview of the school and programs therein. The remaining time would be reserved for tours of labs, facilities, or program specific activities/demonstrations. Following the workshop, we will invite attendees to enjoy lunch with others in their school, again with the goal of building a sense of community and connection.

Just under 200 students joined us throughout the last open house day and the feedback we’ve received from prospective students has been overwhelmingly positive.

• I enjoy everything about the Mission College Open House but what I liked most was connecting with the faculty members from my major and my future classmate.

• It was a great opportunity for me and my son, to talk with some of the professors and for him to get a sense of the Community.

• I enjoyed that every one of the staff were super helpful and very kind to show us around their campus and the kitchen.
