I chose the trauma-informed approach because it reshaped the way I understand patient care. During my clinical experiences, I saw first-hand how deeply trauma can affect a person's mental health and emotional wellbeing. This approach helped me recognize that many mental health challenges stem from past experiences that aren't always visible right in front of us. It reminded me to provide care that is sensitive and respectful based on all of our different experiences.

My first artifact is a quote by Dr. Gordeyko (n.d.) and is meaningful to me as it captures the essence of exactly what trauma-informed care is through a simple, yet impactful message. The drawing and stuffed animal also symbolizes childhood vulnerability and the lasting effects trauma can have from an early age and how this can impact individuals mental health directly. This quote is also a good reminder to consider patient's lived experiences and to foster a safe and empathetic relationship with each patient. It is important to see the whole person and not just their physical symptoms, and this quote does a perfect job at highlighting this.

This piece of artwork by Rinderle (2022) visually represents empathy, mindful connections and shared understanding, which represent core values of the trauma-informed approach in mental health nursing. The fluid and colourful lines between the two heads are shown to symbolize communication, mutual respect and emotional attachment. This can relate to my clinical practice as this image inspires me to be fully present with my patients, especially navigating their emotional pain or psychological trauma. It emphasizes the importance of therapeutic relationships and the power of empathy in creating safe, trusting spaces where patients can begin to open up and begin to heal. This aligns closely with my commitment to providing compassionate care.

This artwork that I created is meaningful to me because it powerfully illustrates how a person's worldview is shaped by layers of influences. The melted crayons visually represents the blending and complexity of these factors and how they "colour" our perceptions and interactions both consciously and unconsciously. This reinforces the trauma-informed principal of understanding the whole person within their unique social and cultural context and challenges me to reflect on my own biases while building more meaningful and therapeutic relationships in the nursing profession.

I chose the topic of postpartum depression because it is critical, yet an often overlooked mental health issue that affects many new mothers. Despite its prevalence, postpartum depression is still surrounded by stigma and misunderstanding. This is a big factor that deterrers individuals from seeking the professional help that they need. I am interested in raising awareness about the emotional challenges that can follow childbirth and in understanding how healthcare systems and families can better support mothers during this extremely vulnerable time. Learning more about this topic will also help me to be more empathetic and informed when supporting individuals experiencing postpartum depression.

I chose the topic of interprofessional care in maternal-child care as it is a more specific topic that highlights the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals to improve outcomes for both mothers and their infants. Maternal and child healthcare is a complex field that involves a wide range of professions including but not limited to nurses, midwives, obstetricians, pediatricians, social works and mental health specialists. Effective teamwork and communication among these providers are essential to delivering the best possible care. Investigating this topic further helps me to understand how collaborative practice can lead to better health outcomes and helps inform my own practice as a future RN

I chose the topic of relational ethics in maternal-child nursing because it emphasizes the importance of trust, empathy, and respectful relationships in arguably one of the most sensitive areas of healthcare. In maternal-child nursing, patients are often in emotionally vulnerable situations and ethical care must go beyond our clinical decisions to include how nurses communicate, listen and support families. Relational ethics focuses on understanding the patient's lived experience and making ethical decisions within context. I believe this approach is essential for providing compassionate, family-centered care for facilitating strong nurse-client relationships.

The final topic I chose was the topic on understanding family dynamics because the structure, roles and relationships within a family have significant impact on health outcomes, especially in maternal-child nursing. Every family is different and there is a multitude of different factors that come into play that can influence how individuals respond to illness, stress or caregiving. As a future nurse, I believe it's essential to understanding these dynamics to deliver truly holistic and family centered care. It is important to have a good understanding of different family dynamics that will be seen in healthcare settings as I hope to learn how to better support diverse families, recognize protentional sources of conflict or stress, and strengthen collaboration between families and individuals.

This poem was written by Pennington (2018), who experienced postpartum depression herself. This piece captures the emotional and physical pain experienced during postpartum depression. Through vivid imagery and personal expression, it voices the often hidden struggles that are not always seen in mothers who are struggling with their feelings of loneliness, confusion and uncertainty. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of relational inquiry and awareness in postpartum depression. This poem is written in a way that is calling out for help and it is important ourselves to recognize the need for support systems to be readily available for mothers enduring through this recovery process.

This powerful image captures the emotional intimacy and the unconditional love at the heart of relational ethics. It is meaningful because it visually represents core values of compassion, empathy and respect for the mother and her child bond. Nurses are called not only to address physical health but also to honor and nurture the deeply personal and emotional relationships that shape a family's well-being. This image reminds us that ethical care involves recognizing the powerful relationships that surround and support them.

This is an inspirational quote by Aydelotte that captures the entirety of relational ethics, as it emphasizes nursing as not just clinical practice but as a deeply human-centered profession. Her words highlight the importance of individualized care, especially the qualities that are critical when working with vulnerable families during transformative life events like childbirth and postpartum. This quote reinforces the idea that ethical nursing is relational and guided by understanding moral responsibility.

This detailed painting is meaningful for exploring family dynamics because it uses colour, movement and interconnected figures to symbolically represent emotional bonds within a family. The child reaching outward while still connected to the adults suggests themes of growth, dependance and protection. This ties into the aesthetic way of knowing as this painting represents our unique human experiences that are showcased within our family relationships. Nurses can also use the aesthetic way of knowing to respond to empathetically to family dynamics.
