Module 1 covers what management is, as well as its aspects. Management can really be many things. It could be managers of a business, the coach/leaders of a team, or even the president of the United States. Two aspects of management are people and process. In the reading, I learned that people with the responsibility and authority to determine the overall direction of an organization is referred to as the management team. Management is also a process. Before someone can manage something or other people, they need a plan. They must enhance their organization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. The attached video explains the functions of a management process. This video immediately caught my attention, as it ties into the reading, by going more in depth about management skills.

Depending on the type of work field you're in, you'll also need special management skills that are specifically needed for your job. Some of these skills include technical, conceptual, and human skills. Technical skills can be defined as a learned capacity. For example, a technical skill for a front-line manager may include a working understanding of a piece of equipment. They have to understand for themselves in order to coach an employee, as well as explain to upper managers. Conceptual skills enable one to generate ideas creatively and intuitively and also show comprehensive understanding of contexts or topics. For example, upper management may have to use conceptual thinking as a strategy for better organization. Human skills are pretty self-explanatory. Managers use human skills to view their teams analytically and objectively, evaluate inefficiencies, and make unpopular choices. They also use these skills when communicating. The attached image shows a manager communicating with an employee. The manager looks pretty happy, so they might be sharing ideas to improve their business. Body language and facial expressions mean a lot when communicating. I picked this image because it shows the manager using human skills.

Module 2 covers business ethics, diversity, and corporate citizenship. Business ethics relates to the conduct or behavior of the members of a business organization. Good business ethics includes adhering to laws and regulations. That way, employees will be comfortable and safe in their workspace. In order for the manager of a business to hire someone, they must have a feel for who they can work with. This is where an interview comes in. Mangers want to hire people with certain skill sets that are needed for the job, which ties into diversity. By diversity, I don't mean race. I mean people with different skills that can collaborate to form new ideas to help improve the business. Diversity enhances creativity and image and improves outreach and morale. Corporate social responsibility, or corporate citizenship, is a business concept in which social and environmental concerns are integrated into a company's operations. This means that successful businesses serve the interests of customers, employees, investors, communities, suppliers, and the environment. The attached video explains the importance of business ethics. I chose this video because he covered a lot of good points that were included in the reading.

Not only does business ethics apply to employees, but it also applies to the managers. Managers use business ethics to make decisions. They set the rules and regulations for their businesses for employees to follow. If their rules aren't being followed, it is up to them to make a decision about how that employee's consequences. A manager must also ensure the continuation of their business. They must make decisions that will benefit their business in the long run. Overall, a manager has to not only think about themselves, but also their employees, customer, and business in general. Making selfless decisions and thinking ahead will ensure success in your business. The attached image shows a manager sharing his thoughts and expectations with an employee. This shows effective decision-making skills, using a visual learning strategy. I chose this image because it is a great representation of a manager using business ethics.

Module 3 covers the topic of globalization. A global organization is any organization that competes outside its native country, while globalization is the process of exchange. Globalization is good for businesses, as it can help them increase profits. Globalization can occur politically, economically, or culturally. While globalization can be an open door to new opportunities, it can also be risky. To be safe, companies should research and plan before engaging in international operations. Companies also have to choose a strategy that correlates with their capabilities and objectives. The attached image shows that strategy is an important factor of management within a global organization. I chose this image because it represents the importance of strategy without utilizing people.

Globalization also comes with competition. Global competition occurs when organizations compete to serve international customers through enhanced communications, improved shipping channels and supply chains, reduction of trade barriers, and centralized financial institutions. There are small players, which are classified as local entrepreneurs that ship products to other countries through Amazon or directly to the customer. There are also giant multinationals, which are big companies, such as, Exxon Mobil, Apple, McDonald's, and Google. The attached image shows the competition between home based, self-taught hairstylists and salon based, professional/licensed hairdressers. People may tend to get their hair done in a salon by a professional, rather than going to a self-taught hairstylist or doing it themselves. I chose this image because it is a great representation of global competition between a small business and big business.

Module 4 covers the importance of planning. Planning is the process of setting goals and defining the actions required to achieve them. In order to plan, you need to have goals. Once goals are set, you will be able to make a plan on when and how those goals will be achieved. Sometimes initial plans don't always work, so it is always a good idea to have a back-up plan in mind in case something fails. Planning ahead of time may also leave room for new and improved ideas. It is also important for a business to have mission, vision, and values statements. This may attract customers and employees, as well as make one's business stand out. The attached image shows that having these statements will increase a business's chances of reaching their goals. I picked this image because it's like a guide to a successful business plan.

Module 4 also covers the importance of decision-making skills. Making a decision is not always easy, especially as a manager. You have to not only think about yourself, but also your employees, customers, and what's best for your business. Making decisions may come with making sacrifices that may influence your decision. If there is more than one manager, or a management team over a business, then group decisions would probably be made. Hearing different point of views will increase chances of the right decision being made, rather than it falling on only one person. In order for a decision to be made, you must identify the problem, establish decision criteria, weigh decision criteria, generate alternatives, evaluate alternatives, and select the best alternative, which is considered your "plan B." The attached image shows factors of decision-making. I picked this image because it shows that making decisions can be hard.

Module 5 covers the importance of having organizational structure when managing a business. Organizational structure is basically a system that says who does what depending on their roles in the business. Being organized in a workspace is important because it helps keep everything in order. Edgar Schein's four key elements of an organization are common purpose, coordinated effort, specialization and division of labor, and hierarchy of authority. It is important to have organizational structure in order to have a successful business. With the correct organizational structure, managers will know how to manage their businesses. They'll be able to decide what positions are needed and how many people are needed to fill those positions in order to reach their desired goal of their business. The attached image shows a hierarchy of authority. I picked this image because it shows that there are levels of authority, or management when pursuing a business.

Organizational culture refers to the collective behavior of the people who make up an organization. The process of establishing culture in an organization is communicating and incorporating a broad cultural framework throughout the organizational process. It is important that every employee understands and aligns with the values and direction of the broader organization. This forms a community amongst employees within an organization and presents the objectives and mission of the organization to be clear.
