I was assigned as Sotheby’s on the group discussion and I felt so excited and surprised that I had never tried marketing before but I actually enjoyed it and was kind of good at it. I came up with so many ideas and it was for the first time I spoke for a while about my thoughts rather than the few words that were not long in the previous discussion. Maybe because I grew up in the age of marketing and see it every day.
I was able to grasp the basics and framework of marketing in the course, which has impacted my career plans. I am willing to try my hand at marketing and am beginning to understand what it is like to work in this field.

During this journey of start thinking of my career, I want to be an art advisor as my career goal at first on TB1, but still confused and curious about the difference between advisor and consultant, that became my most concerned question and finally, I got my answer after Federica Bonacasa, a professional Art Advisor, came to business school and share her paths. In conjunction with what Julia shared during her Q&A time, also an Art advisor as well as an Appraiser and strategic consultant to Foundations, Museums and galleries, I made the following summary

1. Scope of Services: An art advisor typically focuses on providing expert advice and guidance to collectors or individuals who are interested in building an art collection. They may offer advice on various aspects of collecting, including investment strategies, art market trends, and portfolio management. On the other hand, an art consultant may work on consulting projects related to public art commissions, curating exhibitions for specific spaces or buildings, or managing art programs for organizations or institutions. They may also work with artists to help them showcase their work in specific contexts.

2. Independence vs. Collaboration: An art advisor usually works independently and provides advice based on their own expertise and knowledge of the art market. They may have their own program or inventory of artworks, but their primary focus is on advising collectors or individuals. In contrast, an art consultant may work collaboratively with other stakeholders, such as artists, institutions, or organizations, to curate exhibitions, develop art programs, or manage projects. They may also work with existing stock or inventory, and their role may involve more collaboration and coordination with other parties.

3. Emphasis on Investments and Market: An art advisor may have a strong emphasis on investments, art market trends, and portfolio management, as their primary goal is to provide expert advice to collectors or individuals looking to build a valuable art collection. They may help collectors identify potential investment opportunities and navigate the complexities of the art market. On the other hand, an art consultant may have a broader focus, which may include considerations beyond the market value of artworks, such as the context of a specific space, the needs of an institution, or the vision of an organization. Their role may involve more diverse considerations beyond investments and market trends.

4. Specialization and Expertise: An art advisor may specialize in providing expert advice on art collecting, investments, and portfolio management, and may have in-depth knowledge and expertise in these areas. They may also have strong connections in the art market and be well-versed in art market trends. An art consultant, on the other hand, may have more varied expertise, depending on the specific projects they work on. They may specialize in curating exhibitions, developing art programs, or managing public art commissions, and their expertise may be more focused on specific contexts or types of projects.

Overall, while there may be some overlap in the roles of an art advisor and an art consultant, the key differences lie in the scope of services, independence vs. collaboration, emphasis on investments and market, and specialization and expertise in specific areas of the art world. Meanwhile, they are all the same in that they cannot be separated from their clients and their own network of contacts, which are vital.

Starting from Julia's first lecture —— Intellectual Property Rights and Contract Law in Kingston business school, I have developed a keen interest in art law. As someone who has previously worked in a gallery, I was initially intimidated by the unfamiliarity of all kinds of laws. To be mentioned, especially the concept of due diligence gave me a strong impression, which I found to be of utmost importance and repeatedly emphasised in my subsequent studies.

One key point I learned is that the title of an artwork is distinct from its authenticity, and whether or not you own it is irrelevant to its authenticity.

Moreover, provenance, or the history of ownership, is a critical factor to consider. It is essential to thoroughly investigate the ownership history of artwork and verify the legitimacy of each transaction to avoid any potential legal issues. Failure to conduct proper due diligence could result in accusations of handling stolen property, especially in cases where artworks may have been stolen from the Nazis during wartime, as evidenced in the provenance records. This is particularly relevant in today's context, as restitution of stolen art is increasingly being recognised as an important topic in the art world.

The importance of due diligence in the art market cannot be overstated. It serves as a crucial safeguard against potential legal complications and ensures that artworks are acquired and traded in an ethical and legitimate manner. As I continue to delve deeper into the realm of art law, I am increasingly aware of the significance of thorough research, verification, and adherence to legal and ethical standards in the art world. I am excited to further develop my skills in this field and apply them in my future endeavours.

Based on the lecture notes from Federica, it is evident that being an art advisor requires a diverse set of skills. One of the crucial skills is being a good listener, able to understand the needs and preferences of clients. Unlike personal aesthetics, the advisor should prioritize the client's taste when providing advice on art acquisitions.

In addition to listening skills, business acumen and knowledge of the art market are also essential for an art advisor. Understanding the market value of artworks, conducting due diligence on pricing, quality, and provenance, and being a skilled negotiator are all crucial aspects of the role. However, the responsibilities of an art advisor do not end with the transaction. They should also be knowledgeable about post-acquisition tasks, such as framing, installing, and lighting the artwork, as well as managing insurance, cataloguing, and loaning out pieces from the collection.

Another important aspect of being an art advisor is finding clients. The lecture notes highlight several effective strategies, such as showcasing expertise through art tours, lectures, and teaching classes, as well as leveraging word-of-mouth referrals from existing clients and connecting with collectors and art world professionals at industry events, gallery openings, auctions, and lectures.

From Federica's experience, it is evident that becoming an art advisor requires a combination of skills, knowledge, and networking. It is a profession that demands expertise in the art market, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build and maintain a network of clients and contacts in the art world. Being able to provide valuable advice to clients, understand their preferences, and navigate the business aspects of art acquisitions are key factors in becoming a successful art advisor.

Navigating my career path in the contemporary art market has made me increasingly aware of the unique challenges and complexities that come with this industry. The art world, with all its glamour and allure, can also be quite daunting and opaque at times.

The art world is known for its exclusivity and selectiveness, with gatekeepers and hierarchies that can feel intimidating. The language used in the industry can be overwhelming, filled with specialised terms and jargon that can be difficult to understand. Moreover, the art world can often feel like a closed and insular community, with established networks and relationships that can be hard to penetrate. Breaking through these barriers can require persistence, resilience, and the ability to build meaningful connections. As I strive to find my place in this competitive field, I am constantly faced with the challenge of this trait.

Despite these challenges, I am committed to pursuing my passion for contemporary art and carving out a meaningful career in this field. Reflecting on what I had learned in the course of Business and Art, I learned from so many amazing professionals and their insights have inspired me to be proactive and bold in pursuing my career goals and to not be afraid to challenge the status quo or embrace new approaches.

With determination, resilience, and a genuine passion for art, I am eager to chace my position in the art market and carve out my own unique way within it.

As I reflect the lectures given by Marine Tanguy, CEO of MTArt Agency, and Katy Wickremesinghe, founder of KTW London / The Wick, have had a significant impact on my current career plans and goals. Both of these remarkable female CEO has left a lasting impression on me, and I am inspired by their admirable qualities and skills.

Katy Wickremesinghe is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and experienced communications experts in the art world and luxury goods industry. Her presentation was a masterclass which sets an excellent example for me and I found myself drawn to her confident speaking style. Her elegant and confident demeanour during her speech has captivated me, and I aspire to master her speaking style. Katy's personal branding, as well as that of her company, is vivid with colour and memorable, and I am motivated to develop a similar sense of visual identity for my own brand. Our course leaders also shared that during their time working with her, Katy always responds to phone calls with a positive and uplifting tone, no matter how challenging the situation may be. Her unwavering professionalism and grace under pressure have left an indelible mark on me.

On the other hand, Marine Tanguy's MTArt Agency represents disruptive business models, and her lectures have emphasized the importance of caring about our work, understanding the changing global environment, and branding and personal branding. Her message of going back to what we love to do resonated deeply with me, as I strive to align my career with my true passions.

Marine's emphasis on personal branding and projecting our authentic selves also struck a chord with me.
