Describe a goal in which you have made within the last 6 months. (1) How did this goal go for you? (2) Did you complete the goal, why or why not? (3) What would you have done differently to accomplish the goal if you had to set the same goal this time around? (4) What makes sticking to goals difficult? How can you increase your self-efficacy so that goals are more attainable?

I completed the goal. Completing it was fine because I don't really make big goals. A lot of my goals are more so building on previous goals that I had. Ex: a goal of mine was to pass an exam, but I took it day by day and had small goals like do some practice questions and review content.

A failed goal was that I was not able to complete an application for an award, but I was not able to due to a bigger issue going on at that time.

I don't think I would set a different goal or do anything differently with all of my goals because I think all of the goals I set are manageable, even my failed ones, and many of them are just a failure on my end due to different issues, but sticking to a goal can be challenging if it is unattainable or if there are other situations that surround it. Besides making smaller goals that are easily able to do and I wouldn't be too overwhelmed, I could ask for help and plan better and not procrastinate.

A goal I set within the past 6 months was to lose 20 pounds by staying consistent in the gym. The goal went according to plan, I accomplished it within my set timeframe. Part of the reason why I followed through was mainly because I had had enough with my eating habits and knew that I needed to make a change. I wouldn’t have done anything differently because I truly made a life change and lifestyle change, like it’s genuinely hard to imagine how complacent I was with eating certain things this time last year. It was difficult because I really do truly love food and I had gone so long eating whatever I wanted with no physical consequence and that’s actually what made me push back the start time of this goal so many times. I would start and then fail and start again and fail. But this time I completed it through and through, knowing that I wasn’t ok with failing again. In order to increase my self efficacy, I noticed that I have to convince myself that this goal is necessary not optional and not just a want. It is something that MUST happen.

A goal that I had within the last 6 months is to do better at Hunter for the new semester. (1) Currently, this goal is coming to fruition by me becoming more alert on what I needed before at Hunter and being in a much more academic mode (2) I have not yet completed this goal since the semester has not arrived (3) I think I would have achieved the goal before if I would have spoke to someone at Hunter or someone that had transferred before starting (4) Goals are difficult because we cannot predict the future, so circumstances may happen that would hinder us from completing our goals. I can increase my self-efficacy by communicating my hardships, celebrating my positive traits, and working on the negative traits that would held me down.

My goal this year was to read 3 books from May-July when I was home for part of the summer. I was excited because I have a very long list of recommendations, and I wanted to try to be on my phone less. I unfortunately only read 1 full book, but I still enjoyed the quiet that came with reading. I think my attention span has been shortened by my screen time and my other responsibilities. I want to try to complete this goal again for the school semester, but I want to set specific time for me to read no matter how many pages. I also think if i focus more time on enjoying the book, I’ll be more motivated to read then just finishing it.

A goal that I have made in the past 6 months is to pursue the type of research I am interested in which is cancer biology and drug development. This goal went fairly well for me although it was a scary decision to make. I did complete the goal because I made the change from a neuroendocrinology animal wet lab to a more synthetic lab dealing with human epithelial cells.

I may have made a different descion to my goal in hopes of achieving what I wanted from the previous lab and what I wanted from the new one. The different decision would have been maybe collaborating between both labs. Life can change at any moment- that’s what makes goal difficult. I can make my goals more attainable by managing me time and not spreading myself so thin.

A goal I had for the last 6 months was to be more productive and procrastinate less. It is something that still needs be to worked on but am slowly getting better at. It is quite hard to stick to this goal since old habits die hard. However, this summer definitely changed that. With a lot more things going on, I had to change my efficiency to be able to hang out with friends while doing extracurricular and work. It made me realize how efficient I could be if needed, but I hope it is something I can continue for the rest of the year.

My goal was to be more intentional with my actions and people that I keep around me. I think the goal is going well (?). It’s not one where I think there’s a “stop” or a single moment where I know I reached it, but ones that’s a long, ongoing process. So far, I think I have made progress by getting out of my comfort zone by trying new things or spending more time deciding the things that I value. One thing I wish I did differently or rather want to start doing is being more proactive when it comes to reaching out to people for help or guidance (ex: get tutoring or email/talk to professionals in things I am interested in). I think sticking to this goal is just understanding that those skills comes with practice/routine, which is what I’m aiming for to increase self-efficacy.

One of my goals this summer was to write two pieces of writing to prepare for a nonfiction writing workshop I’m taking next semester. Unfortunately, I only managed to brainstorm/plan for this goal. I didn’t complete due to a lack of time and dedication. I was doing a lot of different things this semester, and simply didn’t make space to do this as well. If I set the same goal next summer, I would go out my way to dedicate a certain amount of time per day/week to do it. I feel like not fully incorporating goals that you make in your daily life is what leads to their incompletion. And it’s especially difficult to stick to them if the stakes for the goal simply aren’t that high, and there are more pressing/desirable things that you want to achieve instead. However, to increase my own self-efficacy, I will strive to be more intentional with my goal-setting. Instead of simply thinking about the goal, I will aim to physically do it.

One of my goals for the summer was to read 5 books on my reading list. I started off strong at the end of my semester. I found myself using free time to read more frequently and using time spent traveling as well. I was really good at keeping up with this goal at the beginning. However I feel like this goal is incomplete. Somewhere around mid-June my schedule became increasingly demanding. I was responsible for many things in many different aspects in my life and I found it hard balancing my time and also making time to read. My opinion of this situation is that responsibilities shift with time and depending on certain periods of time may bring more challenges than others. This situation will require prioritizing and figuring out what is most important in that moment. I think this is a goal in progress and something I am still trying to attain. If I were to try to be more efficient at achieving this goal I would likely rearrange my commitments and reprioritize. I think thay mulitple things can contribute to making goals difficult to manage. For instance like in my case sometimes other responsibilities can get in the way. However it can also stem from not holding oneself accountable for attaining that goal. Also there can be times where the goals evolve and shift into something different. I would say the biggest thing with efficient goal adherence would be time management and accountability.
