I would first separate the students and talk to them individually about what happened. Next, I would have them talk to each other and come to an agreement that what happened wasn't acceptable behavior. Then, I would let them work together and come up with some examples of how to prevent this behavior for the future.

I would first tell the students to stop being disruptive and then separate them and ask them what had happened that caused the argument. Then, I would have them speak to each other and solve their problems together, but would make it clear to them that that behavior is not acceptable. Finally, I would allow them to get back to work.

1. Break up the fight.
2. Honestly, in this case a push/shoving match is something that moves beyond the jurisdiction of my classroom. That becomes a school rule, which is enforced by the principal. Meaning, this will have to be reported to the office.
3. Before sending to the office, I would individual talk to both of them to find out what happened.
4. When I find out what happened, my next decision depends on the age of the student. If they are in highschool, I would possibly restrain my impulse to "What the heck. . . IT'S A STUPID PENCIL! You started pushing because of that?" I would also suspect a deeper meaning behind the fight. If it's in middleschool, then I would ask them how they should be disciplined, and we'd eventually figure it out. I'm not an elementary school person---I would probably explain why fighting was bad. Idk. . .

Lucas Styles- I would first break the students up and tell them that I will talk to them in private when I get the chance. Next, I would talk to the students and make them aware that this is unacceptable and that I expect that this issue will not happen again. Finally, I would make sure the students can agree on the issue and what happened in the classroom.

Sara Parker- First I would separate the students. I would then here both sides of the argument. Next I would retrain the student who pushed the other. Have them practice how to get color pencils and return to their seat. Ask them what the situation would be if the pencil they wanted is gone.
