He was born and baptized on 3/6/1475 in a tiny village named Caprese. His father at the time was the short-term mayor.

Michelangelo's early life, Part 1

After his family moved away from the village Michelangelo was assigned a wet nurse. His mother later died sometime in 1481. he grew up in a communal household with many paternal family members. Over the years he was drawn to art and gold smithing.

Started working in Rome by 1498. He created a statue of the virgin Mary holding her dead son for the French cardinal Jean Bilhères de Lagraulas. In 1501 he returned and crafted the Duomo.

His fame caused Torrigiano who at first was a friendly rival to eventually became jealous at Michelangelo's excessive progress in art even going as far as breaking his nose and permanently reshaping his face. After this Michelangelo would go on to make his first sculpture.

In 1505 he would be hired to create 40 statues for the Sistine Chapel but the Pope ran out of funds and cancelled the project.
