There are just so many in Biology. Students really enjoy this "exotic" knowledge.
Every time we encounter something that appears "different", "exotic" "alien" to their understanding of culture students get more excited and motivated. Students have to do research regarding the biological aspects of certain bacteria and viruses I assign to them. After that they have to research the pandemics caused by those pathogens and how different aspects of their society were affected. Then I present to them how different societies and countries handled and were affected by the same pathogens and ask students to do comparisons.

I have students calculate the amount of garbage  themselves,  their class, our school, all schools produce in our city (a rough estimate) and do a visual representation of the volume of garbage compared to a building.
Then I have them do the same for just 2 major cities in China. After that we do the same for other major cities around the planet and I end up teaching them about the accumulation of garbage in our oceans. After that they have to do presentations explaining why it's so important not just for them, but for everyone on the planet to reduce waste.
