Its is the only place she can go for a cure. Rifka celebrates her 13th birthday alone with the other family. Rifka notices how the couple who live there have very nice things. Rifka misses her mom and dad greatly. Before her family left, Rifka's mom gave her the golden locket she always wore, so she could have it to remember her mom. Rifka is lonely and wants to play with the other children around there but is worried that they might accept her because she is a Jew. Rifka's hair has been falling out so she has worn kerchiefs.
