The Nile river is in North-East Africa and its mouth is in the Mediterranean Sea, off of Egypt’s coast. The Nile begins very close to the equator and ends off the coast of Egypt. The Nile has two tributaries, Lake Victoria and Lake Tana. It is the world’s longest largest river with a massive total of 6,654 kilometers. The Nile River's name comes from the Greek word ‘Nelios’ which means ‘river valley’.

The Nile River has been a significant river throughout history for the people of North-East Africa. Then Nile River has around 40 million people living around or near the Nile river, that’s about half of Egypt’s population. The graph to the right shows the population growth in Egypt, around 80 million.

The Nile River has many environmental issues including the Aswan High Dam. This dam is in Egypt, it was built in 1970 and has reduced the flow of water into the river. The Aswan High Dam provides hydroelectricity for Egypt which is a very important asset to survive. However, the Aswan High Damn traps the nutrient-rich silt, which once fertilized the ancient Egyptian farmlands. This stops Egypt from creating more crops which stops trade. The dam has also trapped fish and many other important marine life for the Nile River. Therefore, the Aswan High Dam is a major environmental issue in Egypt.
