Jose Guerrero, my grandfather, was born in Autlan Jalisco, Mexico in 1913. He was born during the Mexican Revolution which took place from 1910-1920. The motives for carrying out the revolution came from the belief that a few wealthy landowners could no longer continue the old ways of Spanish colonial rule. This meant that the system needed to be replaced by a modern one in which those who actually worked the land should extract its wealth through their labor.

The Mexican Revolution started in 1910 when people began to challenge Porfirio Diaz who had been in power since 1877. In late 1910, Francisco I. Madero drafted the Plan de San Luis Potosi in exile for political activism. He called for an uprising starting on November 20, 1910 to restore the Constitution of 1857 and replace Diaz with a provisional government.

On May 25, 1911, Mexican President Porfirio Diaz resigned and left the country. Madero then became president after the elections of 1911. He was assassinated in early 1913 by a commander of the federal forces, Victoriano Huerta, who joined the counterrevolutionaries led by Diaz's nephew in order to seize power. Huerta assumed power, but faced heavy opposition and resigned in the same year and left the country.

After the end of Huerta's presidency, Venustiano Carranza, a wealthy landowner and chief of the Northern Coalition, gathered revolutionary and military leaders to a conference to determine the future of Mexico. Carranza and his followers called for a constitutional convention to draft a supreme law of Mexico and the final version was approved in 1917. Carranza, as the president of Mexico, ignored its promises and as a consequence the revolution continued until 1920. Carranza was assassinated and General Alvaro Obregon rose to power.

Juana Guerrero, my grandmother, was born in 1934. She was born around the Mexican Muralist movement. This movement promoted pride and nationalism in the country rebuilding after the revolution. It provided opportunities to educate, inform, and communicate with others. These murals opened up new possibilities of inclusion and cohesiveness in a community.

An important artist and founder of the Mexican Muralist movement was Diego Rivera. He created pieces with important themes like social inequality, the relationship of nature, and the history and fate of Mexico. He used the walls of universities and other public buildings throughout Mexico and the United States as his canvas. This helped reinvent the concept of public art in the U.S. by paving the way for the Federal Art Program of the 1930s. His painting "Man, Controller of the Universe (Man in the Time Machine)" is a powerful representation of the human race. It consists of heroic worker surrounded by four propeller-like blades.

Around June 13, 2000 we moved to Lennox, California where my parents resided prior to their marriage. In Lennox, there were many murals outside of liquor stores and buildings. This is an example artwork we see in the city and it is outside of El Zorro Market. My family and I would walk to this market to pick up grocery items. My mother would use the murals to educate us on the Mexican Muralist movement that occurred when my grandmother was younger. These were traditions my mother wanted us to be educated on to be able to pass down to future generations. We also have several paintings around our home created by Mexican artists that represent Mexico. These paintings help us stay true to our culture.

A tradition and holiday my family and I celebrate every year is Christmas Eve and Christmas. After Thanksgiving we begin decorating and our most important piece of decoration is our nativity because we incorporate it every night on Christmas Eve. We stay awake until 12 am Christmas Eve night which is considered "Noche Buena". We celebrate the birth of Jesus and express our gratitude towards spending another holiday together as a family. We eat pozole, play board games like Monopoly, and enjoy each other's presence. Every year we also dress in matching pajamas and bake some goodies. We have done this since I was little and it is my favorite time of the year. This is a tradition we will continue to celebrate because it is very important to my family and I.
