The brain sends a nerve impulse down the Neuromuscular Junction. Nerve impulses causes voltage gated calcium ion channels to open and that allows calcium to enter the neuron. The increase in calcium releases acetylcholine (Ach) into the cleft. Ach binds to Ach receptor and activates voltage gated sodium channels which pumps Na+ in and K+ out. Since more Na+ is pumped into the cell it will become depolarized. Depolarization spreads to adjacent areas, opening voltage gated sodium channels and starting an action potential that moves along the sarcolemma. Na+ concentrations stimulate a change in the membrane by opening voltage- gated K+ pumps which allows K+ to diffuse across the sarcolemma out of the muscle fiber. This is called repolarization.
