Herbert Spencer conducted ideas in the evolutionary theory and helped establish new perspectives for all functionalists. This photo pertains to our textbook because it gives Herbert Spencer credit for further investigating different ideas of the evolution theory. Alex Thio mentions that Herbert Spencer had quite a hand in the meaning of what the functionalist perspective is, “He believed that all that societies followed uniform, natural laws of evolution,” (Thio 417).

Karl Marx believed that without conflict, society cannot be of revolutionary change. According to Thio, Karl Marx came up with this sort of idea he called the Conflict Theory, “...society is always marked by conflict, and conflict is the key to revolutionary change,” (Thio 419). When he says, “the history of class struggles,” Marx is referring to conflict and without conflict, there is no change, and without change there is no history.

We can see that multiple people are wearing pictures of happy faces in a frame on their own faces, while another person looks to be stunned. This relates to the Symbolic Interactionist Perspective in our textbook because it deals with multiple people interacting with each other, or “playing along,” with the “framed faces.” Thio defines this perspective exactly as this picture is illustrated, “According to the symbolic interactionism, human beings actively interpret the world around them and then act in accordance with the interpretation,” (Thio 420).

Many female students in school now can relate to this cartoon, even myself. This image relates to our textbook because it shows that there are more women earning bachelor degrees than men, which used to be the other way around in our past history. According to Thio, women have outnumbered men in this category, “Women now outnumber men in earning bachelor degrees…” (Thio 422). This graph and the textbook both prove how our society has changed not just economically and socially, but educationally.

In our future, technology overall allows things like security to be much more efficient for Americans, and even other people all around the world.
