In this video Jay Z is "brushing the dirt off his shoulder" in the book on page 129 the author talks about how President Obama did this in a speech and by doing this he was able to relate to the "neoindigenous youth." With Obama using these gestures he was able to connect to the people that recognize the gestures and the people who use it. This is a gesture that a lot of people where able to catch on to, who might not have known what President Obama was talking about, but because he did a gesture that the people knew they were able to relate to him. This book talks a lot about making a connection to the students in your classroom and to know your students you must know their culture, this is exactly what President Obama did. He was trying to relate himself to his crowd. pg131

I choose this picture, because in the book the author goes outside and plays basketball with the students. if I was a teacher going to go play with the students outside of school I would be looking at the students like this (Theses students are going to judge me, they are going to laugh and destroy me). This would be such an intimidating situation for anyone. The author went out to play basketball, but the students automatically thought he was getting on to them or going to try and get them into trouble. Because the teacher went out there day after day just to play with the students he learned so much about their lives, community and the things going on in the neighborhoods. The students developed a relationship that could never be formed in a classroom, because there was no pressure about getting answer right or wrong, everyone was just being themselves. After playing with the students the teacher was invited to community events and family events, he was creating a bond with these students and their community. pg 135

Rap battles have been around for ages, and they are the same today as they used to been done all across Africa. A battle is formed whenever there is beef or an argument going on between two groups or two different types of people. The "warriors" prepare just like they would if they were going into a battle. Hip-hop battles are a way to bring up what is going on in the community and what needs to be fixed. The author discusses that communities come together to prepare for the rap battle to make sure that people are fully prepared. In earlier chapters from the book the author talks about rap battles in the classroom to bring students together, and here they are used to talk about problems within the community. A teacher could use rap battles between students for either problems in the classroom/school or away to discuss what was learned in class. pg 154

In chapter 9 the main topic is about clothing and how clothing allows students to express themselves and also how they are able to connect to other students and teachers. In the book a teacher is not able to connect to her students, so she takes the advice from the author and buys a cool pair of tennis shoes that she sees on another student. From her buying the shoes the students see it as her trying to embrace them and their culture, so the students talk to her more about what type of clothing they like and what she should try. She is able to connect to her students all from a pair of shoes. This won't work in every situation, but for students to see a teacher trying to connect with them does have the ability to open a door of communication to each other. Students use their clothing style as a way to express themselves, so just because they are coming from the same neighborhood does not mean that they are going go to be dressed the same. pg165

In chapter 9 the author talks about how aware students are to their teacher and to the classroom. The school to prison pipeline is real and students are able to see how school can be set up just like a jail, and even look like one too. In the book a student talks about how can he come to school and actually try to learn and try to care about school when the teacher does not even try to create a nice space for them? This is so true because how can we as teachers expect students to come and put in 100% of their effort if we are not doing the same thing. I choose two pictures for this section, because one is a picture of a classroom that the teacher obviously cares about, the teacher worked to create a welcoming envinroment that is a place that students will want to go to. The second picture is a bare classroom that is so cold that it could be a jail classroom. A student cannot come to school and think of it like a jail if we want these students to succeed. pg169
