Holiday Project task

Students are given a budget of €1000.

They must work individually/pairs/groups but the budget remains the same.

Students must pick a city where the TL is spoken.

Students are given success criteria of sourcing authentic: transport, accommodation, 1 cultural activity, 2 meals out and 1 fun activity.

The budget does not change so students will have to make do with what they can afford within their budget.

They then present their holiday plan (mainly in the TL) to the class. Students are then encouraged to ask questions and share feedback.

Spanish TY Culture project

Ty students in groups of 4 are asked to complete a project where they need to complete a presentation and a matching poster on any aspect of Spanish of Latin American culture. They need to create a powerpoint together, they do the intro and conclusion together, but each member of the group has to present 2 slides of their own. They present their poster and powerpoint to the class and all other groups are asked to complete a scoring card, marking the presenting group on their poster, powerpoint and overall impression. This gives the students autonomy in their project

They must design a game that can be played in the classroom. They write the instructions and put them into a shared powerpoint.

Students create a promotional video in French of their school.

Student Brief:

1. The task in this project is for you to work in groups and create a 3 minute film in French using the title Voici Mon Ecole.

2. This has been chosen as a team project because it covers oral use of French plus 5 other elements: teamwork, technology, project-based work, reflection and skills development.

3. You are asked to create a 3 minute film about your school, over one or two lessons (for filming) and with independent and group work at home/out of the classroom (for editing etc). Your film must be in French (and so have audio in French) and cover at least 4 different aspects of the school to show someone about various places and people.

4. Each of you in the team must appear in the film and speak some French.

5. You must use your school device for filming.

6. Ask before you film people and make sure you have their consent – and if they speak, it ought to be in French too.

7. Divide up the roles in your group – script, filming, speaking, editing etc – and agree who is the leader, i.e. who will ensure you meet deadlines etc. Work out what the key phases of activity are and divide your time carefully to finish by the deadline.

Students should create their board game, include clear instructions and compile approx 20 questions such as: parlez-moi d'une journée typique etc.

This is a good way to review vocabulary, prepare for the oral exam, review grammar (imperative form for instructions, tenses...)

Students can work in groups of 2 or 3. They can present their game to the rest of the class. Groups can then play the game.

At the end, students can vote for the best game.

First year activity to add to student portfolio:

Design a wanted poster (once students have the language/scaffolds to talk about name, age, physical and personality descriptions, etc.). To develop numeracy skills students can also include a reward.

Students will be given a template to include a drawing of the 'suspect' as well as a space to write as much of a description about the 'suspect' as possible. Students can then stick their posters on the board (creating a 'gallery') and share their work with their peers - this can also lead to some peer feedback.

Work should be allocated evenly by the group so all members communicate in the TL (e.g. students 1 & 2 will introduce the science labs and locker area, students 3 & 4 will introduce the MFL classroom and another area …….)
When they are ready (date pre-decided) to speak autonomously about their areas of the school, they can move into the filming phase

To integrate further digital skills, they can use editing options before submitting the final product (video clip)
The individual video clips can be grouped together in a zipped file or « wetransfer » or « pearltrees » to be sent to the « paired » foreign school.

Take advantage of a Fancy Dress Day e.g. last day before Halloween.

Using prior knowledge of vocabulary and adjectives, students can act out a description of a famous person and describe what they have achieved in life as a famous person.

One example, a male student dressed up as Mrs. Doubtfire. He explained (as Mrs. Doubtfire) why he dressed up as a woman and began telling the personal story of Mrs. Doubtfire.

Similarly, in the same class group, 3 students dressed up as witches and pretended they were in Hocus Pocus. These 3 students, as a group, explained what they were planning to do to take control of their little town.
