George Wilson was a symbol of the working-class man who desperately sought the American Dream. He is loyal to his ideas and is trying to make a living through his garage business. His physical appearance as a "spiritless and anemic, and faintly handsome" (Fitzgerald 25) man and his emotional exhaustion represent the emptiness of chasing his dreams that are always just out of reach-- enough money, happiness, and closeness to his wife. Myrtle's affair and George's unawareness of the affair make George one of the most tragic characters to show how the American Dream can be corrupted by class and power.
