In my first class observation I felt as if I had been there for many years, children greeted in a lovely way and the teachers and all the people who are part of this institution made me feel so comfortable that all those things made that nervousness disappear. I felt ready just to enjoy the adventure with kids!

In the first class observation I was centered on the kid’s routine; They start at 8 o’clock singing to the kindergarten and to the class, then the teacher takes the assistance and they check the weather. After these routine activities, kids have “the pleasant moment” in which teachers read a story to them. After reading they have breakfast, they have a free play in the class or in the courtyard and after this, they have an assigned activity by the teacher in the class.

Apart from the routine mentioned before, they have physical activity on Thursday; Every fifteen days, they share activities with the nutricionist that include preparing and cooking different things.

My first observation let me discover a unique world in which I felt I was a child again.

In the second observation I made I centered on “teaching materials” and I discovered that children enjoy all the different alternatives that teachers offer. The important thing of the different materials is how they are used and for what. They love to paint with sponges and with the “little painting finger”, sensory dough, paste different materials, short stories, puppets, songs, etc.

In my third class observation I centered on “Evaluation”. Both teachers, the helper teacher and the main one, evaluate the progress of every child. They use observation to detect how they achieve the different topics teachers teach, comparison to compare what every child could do and can do after the topic is explained, individual jobs to see how they transfer knowledge.

I learnt a lot from this observation!

I describe the assistantships all together because they have some things in common. I must highlight that teachers let me help and assist children in every moment they needed me, I didn’t have to wait for teachers to ask for me in a specific moment. I was just one more teacher there. I could help, interact with the children, help them when they required and pay attention to every step they made in the different activities. The thematic unit in the three assistantship classes was “Senses”, the activities were different in every class and I could wash their hands after specific activities, I helped them to put their coats to go to the backyard, I guided them when they got confused in some activity and I helped some of them to get calm when they felt frustrated or angry by some reason.
These assistantships were really useful, children got used to me and I got used to them too, I felt I was part of the class. It was an enriching experience because I could realize all the unexpected things that could happen in a class and all the different needs and interests that kids had.

Thematic unit: shapes

In this morning class we checked the weather and we listened to our feeling song. The main activity was in relation to shapes in which a story was told by the “Little Juan puppet”. The story said that the little duck was sleeping when suddenly he heard a noise, it was his friend called Poli, it was a little monster in many shapes. While the little duck was telling the story, I assembled the monster every time a shape was mentioned.Through this activity, children could recognize shapes in English through a meaningful context. After this, they assembled their own monster with different shapes that I had prepared for them and glue. The activity finished mentioning the shapes they had on their worksheets.

The main activity was based on painting different shapes on the worksheet using paintings and cotton swabs. They could integrate different skills like fine motor, autonomy as they can choose different colors to paint their shapes, and interaction with the teacher and peers. When they finished the activity they named the different shapes and their colours.

Thematic unit: shapes
In this class children could identify shapes in English through a meaningful context and they differentiated between big and small sizes. Some skills were integrated through the activity like autonomy as they could assemble shapes using sticks and dough, and creativity as they created different shapes. The activity was accompanied by flashcards in which they could look at them and guide themselves looking at them. When they finished it, I asked them the shape they had formed using the materials, and I showed them the correct flashcard mentioning it in English and I encouraged them to repeat it with me.

They worked on a worksheet that has an image of a train with different shapes, but the shapes were untidy. They had to insert the correct ones in the correct place using “the little painting finger” and glue. After finishing the activity I asked them to tell me the different shapes the train had and their colours too.
