While Batman has his butler with him, he is very reliant all on himself. Batman has to fight off hordes of threats while remaining confident and trusting his every move without a doubt. "Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string" is what Emerson says. To Batman, any move and choice he makes is the right one, if its not, he goes right back up and fixes it.

Break my Stride by Matthew Wilder follows a girl who leaves Wilder as she shows self-reliance in not letting anything stop her. She "Didn't want no one to hold [her]" as "Nobody gonna slow [her] down". This independence is paralleled to Emerson's Self-reliance as he breaks away from society, not letting anyone hold him down. "Nothing can bring you peace by yourself"(Emerson) and the girl in "Break my Stride" shows this by breaking away from Wilder, finding her own peace.

"Called Fortune. Most men gamble with her, and gain all, and lose all, as her wheel rolls... some other favorable event, raises your spirits, and you think good days are preparing for you." The Lottery is what resembles Emerson's view of society. Yyes, good things may occur but most of the time, you will lose the lottery. The only way to win the lottery, and in Emerson's eyes, Society is to stop playing.

Chris McCandless embodies these principals as he believes in being purely self-reliant. He declines the offer from his driver for better gear and some extra food. He intends to get away from society for a few months, even leaving a job in the continental US to go travel in Alaska. He embodies Emerson's teachings to leave from others, and to trust himself, no matter what it may be. He wishes to take his journey into a place to which he can experience nature to the highest degree to learn to know himself fully.
