My role: 1st AC

This documentary will explore how musical performances influence people.

There will be a variety of interviews with a multitude of people all with different relations to music, spanning from other genres, instruments and experiences.

We will include some footage of the bands we will interview, the performances of individuals, and places they talk about.

Through researching music events in Edinburgh, I have discovered there will be the Diwali Parade. This is an excellent opportunity to film some great footage of bands from different cultures. Presenting how musical performance brings people together through dance, collaboration and fun.

This will be happening on the 2nd November 2025.

Hype!

Hype has influenced my creative decisions for this project because there is a combination of interviews and observational scenes. The subjects are left uninterrupted by questions.

The Velvet Underground-

We discovered that we need to make our questions more concise to ensure the answers stay relevant to the topic and core question of the documentary.

The pitch worked in terms of grabbing an interest from a wide range of people. We had one person present the idea, however, I think next time it would be good to have the whole group included because this gives the impression of being more organised and cooperative as a group, which gives the panel more reassurance that the project would be a success.

Next time, we could include a short teaser video to give people more of an idea about what our project entails.

I think we succeeded in answering the questions well, in a concise and professional manner while maintaining eye contact to show good confidence.

I have done some research to aid my group on how to interview successfully.

Some tips I have found;

-put the applicant at ease- make eye contact, review the questions before hand so you have some information to draw on.

-ask open-ended questions

-listen more, talk less

-take notes

-understand what you can't ask.

The cinematography was a success in this project because the studio space we worked in provided us with excellent lighting which was fitting with the theme of music performance.

I also did some set dressing for the interview, and changed around the background of the subject so that his head would be framed better. I made sure the stage lights were lighting up the key parts of the frame, such as the guitar and the interviewee.

I ensured that we framed the subject so that the speakers and guitar were seen in the frame, to make it more interesting for the audience. The eyeline was also a success as the interviewer was directed to be behind the camera to the right. This helped with making the interviewee's eyeline more natural and conversational. This was inspired by the interviews used in 'The Velvet Underground' as the interviews appeared more natural due to their eyeline and participatory style.

I suggested we filmed his performance using a handheld camera, to separate it from the interview and make the documentary appear more captivating to the audience.

The fluidity of the movements also enhanced the performance.

The interview itself was a success because the interviewer asked open questions, allowing the subject to stay on topic while expanding and bringing his own insights into the documentary. However, sometimes the interviewer would interrupt the subject or talk for too long about their own opinions, which didn't give the subject a chance to talk as much as we would have liked. This mistake is easily fixed in post as we can cut some of it out.

• The passion that you have for the project was clear but make sure that all of the details come across.
