The setting in the beginning is in a restaurant. Elena, the main character is applying for a job. “Look I really need this job. Please. I’ll wait tables. I’ll wash dishes. I’ll do anything you want. Just give me a chance.” -p3 The setting is important because she is desperate to get a job. She does not get the job at the restaurant. Later she accepts a job offer with Aether Corporation without thinking how dangerous it is because she needs the money. “I scan the first page - and freeze when I see the amount of money they’re offering. My God. No freaking way. That has to be a typo or something. There are way too many zeros there. “Is this number correct?” “It is” -p11

I was wrong the entire time. Lynne is the killer. I can’t believe it. I trusted Lynne. She wanted to help us. She saved us in the future. No she saved Adam. The one person who could cure her daughter.” -p251

People should trust others more.

Elena was trying to warn Chris that he was going to be killed but he thought she was the killer and told her to leave. “He grips the wrench harder and growls, “Get out of here. Now.” “Chris listen to me. I’m not the killer. I don’t even have a gun!” -p242 He should have listened to her because she was trying to help him. Chris got shot by Lynne but was lucky and survived. He apologized to Elena and said he should have trusted her. “I’m sorry about before and everything I said. I was wrong about both of you.” -p262

Elena should have trusted Adam. “Your mom,” I interrupt. “She has cancer.” “Yeah.” He stares at the floor. “That’s why I took the cure. But I was never working for Aether, I swear.” “Then who recruited you to steal the cure?” “It was Lynne. Aether never knew about it.” -p247

Characterization

“Elena says "Do you like to fight?” “No,” I say again “but I will if I have to” -p10 She is not afraid to fight people if she needs to.

Elena thinks “There might be risks involved - but what other options do I have? No one else is going to help me. I’m on my own. And my time is running out. I sign my name on the line.” -p12 She desperately needs money and feels like she must take the job even if it is dangerous.

Adam is nice to Elena. He doesn’t think she is freaky for having an eidetic memory. “Yes.” I’m not sure if I should reveal my secret to him. But I figure we’ll all learn each other’s “talents” eventually. “ I remember every word they said. I have an...eidetic memory.” -p31 “Adam sits up straighter. Really? That’s amazing.” -p31

Elena's actions: “The woman huffs. “I ordered a-” The words pour out of me before I can stop them: “A bacon cheeseburger without mayo, with mustard, no tomatoes, Swiss cheese instead of cheddar, extra avocado and bacon, onion rings instead of fries, and an extra side of coleslaw. Plus an order of the mixed green salad with no tomatoes, and a Diet Coke with no ice.” I stop to take a breath, and then I add, And he ordered the blue cheese burger with a Sprite.” -p4 This shows that she has an eidetic memory.

Elena has tattoos and long, black hair.
