  • Geronimo had to overcome westward expansion with the americans breaking many treaties and stealing the Natives land.
  • Another challenge he experienced was when Mexican soldiers lead be Jose Maria Carrasco killed his family while he was while he was away on a trading trip in 1851.
  • Geronimo was part of many raids against Mexicans and Americans.
  • Geronimo was a formidable warrior, the Americans even shouted his name as a battle cry.
  • Geronimo was the last Native American leader to formally surrender.
  • In 1853 the U.S made a treaty with the Apache that took many rights away from the Apache’s.  Some articles from the Treaty were Apaches give themselves to the U.S government, Apaches give their land to the U.S and that they could not go into Mexican territory.

  • Geronimo was very brave as he fought in many life threatening battles.
  • Geronimo kept his hair short as a tribute to his family who were murdered by Mexican soldiers.  In his culture having your hair short is a sign of mourning.
  • Geronimo was different and decided to not learn english while in Fort Sill setting himself apart from the other Native Americans.
  • Geronimo never got to see his traditional land again being captured in 1886 until his death in 1909.
  • Geronimo was even in a parade that Teddy Roosevelt set up.  This shows that Geronimo was a quite famous Native American at the time.
