         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>(+) new learning: </strong>I became far more familiar with the official documents which have been put out by the ministry aimed at improving education, achievement and the well being of our provinces' Indigenous students <br><br><strong>(-) something you disagree with or find confusing: </strong>I find it confusing that school boards have FNMI leads, monies allotted for funding allocated to FMNI students, mandatory Indigenous School Board Advisory Committees and self-identification policies and yet many staff are unaware. <br><strong><br>(?) a conclusion or question you have: </strong>I wonder how boards could communicate to staff more effectively the above information.<br><br>- </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-Many organizations and individuals are working towards eliminating racism towards Indigenous peoples in Ontario and Canada however more needs to be done<br>-In the school system there have been policy frameworks in place since 2007 to recommend and measures to close the achievement gap<br>-These policy frameworks are reviewed every few years<br>- There has been some improvement in scores but data is limited<br>-Schools are allocated funding for FNMI initiatives/resources, school boards have FNMI leads but many staff are not aware </div>]]></description>

         <title>Bias and Appropriation </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-Educators must acknowledge their baises and assumptions<br>-Educators need to examine the resources they use in their classroom ad view with a critical eye<br>-Representation and authenticity need to be considered when selecting resources, excursions and experiences etc. <br>-Privilege is both individual as well as systemic- the system itself is set up for certain people to succeed<br>-Many white, cis, able bodied often have trouble recognizing their privilege <br>-There is a fine line between appreciation and appropriation<br>-Books for read alouds and class/school libraries, PD, art projects should be chosen and planned carefully, Involve the FNMI peoples in your community in this process wherever possible </div>]]></description>

         <title>New Learnings: Barriers in Education and the Achievement Gap</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>-There are significant gaps in achievement, graduation rate, length of time taken to graduate as well as income, employment rates and adult literacy rates between non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples in Ontario and Canada at large <br>-Indigenous education is not only for FNMI peoples, but for ALL (for example, we should all understand and educate ourselves about the treaties which apply to the land on which we live and abide by them)<br>-in 2007 the first official policy framework to close the gap was published by Ontario Ministry <br>-Some salient things to work on were quality PD for educators , supports for FNMI students, self-identification process, engaging the community etc.<br>-The failure of our education system to support Indigenous student and to help them succeed, among other things, contributes to social determinants of health and lifelong outcomes: https://ontario.cmha.ca/provincial-policy/social-determinants/<br><br></div>]]></description>
